The Küchen Tunnel is a road tunnel in Hesse on the Federal Highway 44 . It passes under the Hessisch Lichtenau district of kitchens.

Building description

It is a two-tube tunnel with a length of 1372 m (north tube) and 1333 m (south tube). The tunnel has five cross passages , two of which are passable and three are passable. It has its smallest overburden with six meters in the Steinbachtal.

Construction began on November 1, 2012. The tunnel was from the South East Portal in the New Austrian Tunneling Method ascended , there is also the utilities were located. The tunnel construction had a very tight timeframe due to nature conservation regulations . The north tube was broken through on August 13, 2014. The tunnel breakthrough took place on August 26, 2014 in the north tube. The test phase for the Küchen tunnel began in December 2017. In February 2018, the tunnel's opening to traffic was postponed to April 2018. It was opened to traffic on April 13, 2018.
