Paul Thorn (born July 13, 1964 in Kenosha , Wisconsin ) is an American songwriter and singer whose style is a mixture of blues and rock music .
Life
Thorn's family moved with him as a toddler to Tupelo , Mississippi , where he grew up. He is the cousin of Stan Thorn, the keyboard player for the band Shenandoah . Before he began his musical career, Thorn was a professional boxer for a short time and fought against former world champion Roberto Durán in a televised fight across the United States . He also won a middleweight championship for the Midwest in Memphis , Tennessee .
In the years that followed, Thorn played in local clubs and worked in a furniture factory. Music manager Miles Copeland , a brother of drummer Stewart Copeland from the band The Police , discovered his skills. He signed a recording deal with A&M Records and produced his first album, Hammer & Nail , in 1997 . Seven more albums and TV recordings followed, including Jimmy Kimmel live! Early 2008.
Before the performance, Thorn played at concerts by various well-known artists, such as Sting , John Prine , Marianne Faithfull , Mark Knopfler , Robert Cray , Bonnie Raitt , Toby Keith and Jeff Beck .
