My friend, the dolphin is a feature film that depicts the friendship between a boy and a dolphin and is based on a true story. The film was released on September 23, 2011 in the USA and on December 15 in Germany.

The boy Sawyer comes together with an angler an injured dolphin on the beach in Clearwater in Florida . The female dolphin, named Winter , is taken to a nearby marine animal hospital. Here Dr. Clay Haskett will save the animal's life, but his fluke must be amputated. As a result, Winter itself begins to develop an alternative way of swimming: it moves its stump from side to side like a fish moves its tail fin. As a side effect, this strengthens the side muscles in the tail. It is feared that the unnatural muscle growth would damage your spine in the long term . Sawyer, who befriends Haskett's daughter Hazel, neglects school to spend time with Winter to worry about his mother. There are a number of differences between film and reality. In the film, winter is found near Clearwater in summer , but actually in December in the Mosquito Lagoon, which is on the opposite side of the US state of Florida . In reality, Clearwater Marine Hospital had no financial problems and did not have to fight its closure. The film mentions that Winter's fin had to be amputated; in fact, the fin fell off by itself due to the severed blood supply. The development of the artificial fin took over a year in contrast to the period of several weeks shown in the film. The new material for attaching the prosthesis was actually named after Winter and is called "WintersGel".
