Arundinaria fargesii ( . Syn : Bashania fargesii ), the Chinese mountain bamboo is a bamboo - type of the genus Arundinaria or Bashania .

description

Arundinaria fargesii forms up to 10 m high stalks in its natural range, which can reach a diameter of up to 60 mm. However, in Central Europe these dimensions are only achieved under optimal conditions and after a long period of use. The stalks are green to gray-green and, after budding, lightly floured in a whitish color, silver spots form with age. The internodes are up to 60 cm long, the stalk walls are relatively thick, which gives the stalks great stability. In the first year, three main branches and then further secondary branches are trained per node, which branch out further in the following years. Only a very inconspicuous sulcus forms just above the branch bud. The length of the leaves varies between 10 and 20 cm, the width is up to 2 cm. The leaves are very firm, glossy and dark green. A. fargesii forms very many runners , which in contrast to other runners-forming bamboos, such as z. B. Phyllostachys , reach a depth of more than 70 cm. Accordingly, the stalks also sprout from a greater depth and are accordingly stable. The sprouts are very hairy and red-brown with greenish edges.

distribution

Arundinaria fargesii is native to the Chinese provinces of North Sichuan , Shaanxi , West Hubei and Gansu and grows there at heights of up to 2500 m.

Culture and use

Arundinaria fargesii is hardy down to −26 ° C, so it can also be cultivated outdoors in Europe. The stalks are traditionally used in China for paper production and, due to their stability, are well suited as building and scaffolding material.
