Marsilius College
The Marsilius-Kolleg is an interdisciplinary college of the University of Heidelberg within the framework of the university's application approved by the Science Council in the third funding line of the Excellence Initiative of the federal and state governments. It was set up in November 2007 as a "Center for Advanced Study" for a period of five years and aims to promote dialogue between different scientific cultures (life sciences, natural sciences, social and legal sciences, humanities and cultural sciences) and to initiate and cross-discipline research projects to be more specific.
The college is named after the founding rector of Heidelberg University, Marsilius von Inghen .
University political background
The starting point for founding the Marsilius Kolleg was a discussion about the future of the full university model as part of the application for the Excellence Initiative. The University of Heidelberg aims to provide an institutional answer to the problems of constantly increasing scientific specialization and the associated isolation of scientific cultures by establishing the Marsilius College. The aim is to network the scientific cultures on the basis and not at the expense of disciplinary specialization. Through the Marsilius Kolleg, the experimental natural and life sciences in particular are to be involved in the interdisciplinary dialogue, as they can only rarely participate in the existing Centers of Advanced Study due to their greater locality (laboratories and working groups).
aims
According to the statutes approved by the Senate of Heidelberg University, the Marsilius-Kolleg pursues the following goals:
a) Promotion of the dialogue between the representatives of different scientific cultures within the framework of an integrative understanding of nature, spirit and culture;
b) Networking within the university and between it and the non-university research institutions located in the Heidelberg area and with selected national and international partners;
c) Initiation of new research projects that transcend a single scientific culture;
d) Carrying out such research projects with the involvement of young scientists;
e) Communication of the knowledge gained to the university and non-university public.
Working method
Every year the university appoints 10 to 15 scientists as fellows of the Marsilius Kolleg. At the college, the fellows work on a project that requires collaboration between different scientific cultures. The fellows' work plans should result in research projects that can either be funded by external donors or by the college itself.
Marsilius lecture
The Marsilius-Kolleg organizes a "Marsilius Lecture" every semester, in which well-known scientists from different areas speak on interdisciplinary topics. There they will be awarded the “ Marsilius Medal ”, which is awarded for special merits in the dialogue between scientific cultures. Speakers and award winners have been so far

Marsilius controversial
The event format "Marsilius controvers" is conceived as a discussion between a group of experts, consisting of fellows from the college, and the audience on a socially relevant topic. After the scientists have presented their research on the topic from various disciplinary perspectives in short presentations, the audience has the opportunity to ask critical questions and enter into a dialogue.
Topics and discussants have been:

Marsilius studies
At the suggestion of students, the "Marsilius Studies", an interdisciplinary supplementary certificate, were set up in 2010. As part of the range of courses, professors from different subject backgrounds offer joint seminars on overarching topics. As a final performance, the students hold a specialist lecture with an interdisciplinary goal in a mixed colloquium.
organization
The Marsilius-Kolleg is headed by two directors from different scientific cultures who report to the Rector of Heidelberg University. They are elected by the university's senate for three years. The founding directors were the virologist Hans-Georg Kräusslich and the sociologist Wolfgang Schluchter . The molecular biologist Thomas Rausch and the historian Bernd Schneidmüller were elected as current directors in 2014 .
The Fellows of the Marsilius Kolleg are appointed by the Rectorate at the suggestion of the selection committee, which also includes external scientists.
