Nezool

Coin of nezool

Nezool was a Christian king of the Aksumite Empire in Africa. He ruled in the second half of the fifth century. So far, Nezool is only known from its coins. There are also coins on which he appears as Nezana , although research also discusses the possibility that there were two different rulers, perhaps ruling at the same time. His coins show his portrait with a cross on his head and framed by ears of wheat on both sides. The Greek inscriptions on the gold coins are BACILEYC NEZOWL (King Nezool) and QEOV E VXAPICTIA (by the grace of God?). Both gold and silver coins have been preserved from Nezana, with the name NZWL, i.e. Nezool, also being found on some of the silver coins.
