The dam Ivaylovgrad is a dam with hydroelectric plant in Haskovo Province , Bulgaria . It dams the Arda about 5 km before the Greek border to a reservoir. The associated power plant has an installed capacity of 104 MW . The city of Ivaylovgrad is about six kilometers south of the dam.

The dam was built from 1959 to 1964. It is owned by the Nazionalna elektritscheska kompanija EAD (NEK EAD) and is also operated by NEK EAD.

Barrier structure

The shut-off is a gravity dam of concrete with a height of 73,09 m above the foundation bed . The length of the top of the wall is 250 m. The top of the wall is at a height of 131 m above sea level .

The dam wall has both a bottom outlet and a flood relief with six gates. A maximum of 270 m³ / s can be discharged via the bottom outlet, and a maximum of 5250 m³ / s via the flood discharge. The design flood is 7350 m³ / s; the probability of this event occurring has been determined to be once every 1,000 years.

Reservoir

With a normal storage target of 120.20 m (max. 130.75 m at high water), the reservoir extends over an area of around 15.2 km² and holds 157 million m³ of water. The minimum congestion destination up to which electricity can still be generated is 74.50 m.

power plant

The power plant is located at the foot of the dam in the middle of the river. It went into operation in 1964 and is used to cover peak loads . The power plant has an installed capacity of 104 MW . The average annual production is 195 million kWh . The 4 machines of the power plant each produce a maximum of 21 MW. The fall height is 52 m.
