Petar Stojtschew (also spelled Petar Stoychev internationally , Bulgarian Петър Стойчев ; born October 24, 1976 in Momchilgrad ) is a Bulgarian swimming athlete and winner of the gold medal over 25 km open water swimming at the 2011 World Swimming Championships in Shanghai and at the 2012 European Open Water Championships in Piombino . Since March 13, 2013, he has been Minister of Sport and Sport Education in the government of Marin Rajkow .
On August 24, 2007, Stojtschew was able to undercut the world record set by German swimmer Christof Wandratsch in 2005 for crossing the English Channel and set a new record time of 6 h 57 m 50 s. He became the first to swim across the English Channel in under 7 hours.
On January 10, 2016, he improved Christof Wandratsch's world record over 1000 m ice swimming at the Ice Swimming German Open in Burghausen to 12 m 28.10 s.
