Kalamaria ( Greek Καλαμαριά ( f. Sg. )) Is de facto a district of Thessaloniki , but de jure forms an independent municipality in the Central Macedonia region . With around 91,000 inhabitants, it is the second largest municipality in Macedonia.
location
Kalamaria is located around 7 km south of the city center of Thessaloniki on a promontory (Mikro Emvolo or Karabounaki) in the Thermaic Gulf or its northeastern branch, the Gulf of Thessaloniki.
history
The area has been inhabited since prehistoric times. This is where ancient Thermai, after which the bay is named, was located. The name Kalamaria is found for the area southeast of Thessaloníki for the first time in 1083. At the beginning of the 13th century, the Byzantine administrative unit Katepanikion Kalamaria comprises the settlement of the same name and the western part of the Chalkidiki peninsula along the coast of the Thermaic Gulf. The Katepanikion Kalamaria consisted mainly of land holdings from monasteries on the Athos peninsula.
Today's city has its origins in a founding in the 1920s and, like other suburbs of Thessaloníki, served the reception of Greek refugees from Turkey, whereby in Kalamaria mainly Greeks from the Black Sea coast settled. Kalamaria was part of the municipality of Thessaloníki until 1943 and only received its administrative independence in that year.
Recently, calamaria has seen significant population growth. In 1981 only 51,676 people lived here. The city consists of 10 districts or districts.
