Axios ( Greek Αξιός ( m. Sg. )) Is a municipality in the municipality of Delta in the regional district of Thessaloniki on the western edge of the metropolitan area of Thessaloniki in the Greek administrative region of Central Macedonia . It was named after the river of the same name . In 2010 it merged with the neighboring parishes Chalastra  and Echedoros in the newly created parish Delta  , in which Axios has since formed a parish.

location

The Axios area is located in the north and northwest of the Thermaic Gulf in the middle of the Central Macedonian Plain, which is shaped and formed by the courses and mouths of the Axios , Gallikos , Loudias and Aliakmonas rivers . The Axios River runs from north to south through the municipality and flows into the Aegean Sea in the form of a delta in its southeast corner . The Loudias river runs along the western border of the municipality and forms the border between the regional districts of Thessaloniki on the one hand and Imathia and Pieria on the other.

The distance between Kymina and Thessaloniki in the east is 27 km, to Athens in the south-southeast are 494 km. Vrachia is 5.4 km to the northwest from Kymina and 34 km west of Thessaloniki. The distance between Nea Malgara and Kymina is 900 m, the distance to Thessaloniki in the east 26 km.

population

The municipality of Axios was created in 1997 by the Greek local government reform law, which combined the previously independent municipalities of Kymina , Vrachia and Nea Malgara into one municipality. The seat of the municipality of Axios was the village of Kymina, which was also the largest village in the municipality with 3652 inhabitants in 2011 (1991: 3469, 1981: 3139). The village of Nea Malgara had 2404 inhabitants in 2011 (1991: 2349, 1981: 2284), the village of Vrachia 557 inhabitants in 2011 (1991: 638, 1981: 625).

economy

In keeping with its location in the Central Macedonian plain with its alluvial land, agriculture forms the economic backbone of the municipality of Axios.

traffic

Motorway 1 runs parallel to the Axios river from north to south from Evzoni via Katerini to Athens (also European route 75 ) with a single route to the Axios motorway triangle near the village of Chalastra . From Chalastra, Autobahn 1 runs in a shared route with Autobahn 2 ( Europastraße 90 ) from northeast to southwest and also passes through the Axios area. The old national road 1 , which also runs through Axios, has lost a lot of its importance since the expansion of Autobahn 1 and currently only handles regional traffic.
