Evosmos ( Greek Εύοσμος ( m. Sg. ); Alternative name: Neo Kordelio ) is a city in the Greek region of Central Macedonia .
Evosmos was originally called Neos Koukloutzas (Νέος Κουκλουτζᾶς). Under this name it came in 1926 to the rural community Harmanköy (gr. Charmankioi Χαρμάνκιοϊ, renamed in 1927 to Stathmos Σταθμός), in 1934 to the community of Kordelio (Κορδελιό). In 1955 the settlement was renamed Evosmos (dt. About 'fragrance'), which at the same time became the seat of the rural community, which from then on also called itself Evosmos and under this name was raised to the city community (dimos) in 1972 . With the administrative reform in 2010 , Dimos Evosmos was combined with the neighboring municipality of Eleftherio-Kordelio to form the new municipality of Kordelio-Evosmos , the seat of which it has been since then.
Evosmos is located in the northwest of the Thessaloniki metropolitan area. Half of the settlement area or district of Ilioupoli belongs to the Evosmos area . The other half belongs to the municipality of Pavlos Melas .
In 1821, shortly before the start of the Greek Revolution , a church was built on what is now Evosmos, which is dedicated to St. Athanasios and which still exists today. From 1922 to 1923 the population of Evosmos increased significantly for the first time due to the influx of Greeks from Asia Minor as part of the "population exchange" agreed in the Treaty of Lausanne (1923) after the Greek defeat in the Greco-Turkish War (1919-1923) .
Until the 1980s, Evosmos did not have a densely populated settlement structure. In 1981 Evosmos had a population of 26,528. In the following years, Evosmos greatly expanded its population by designating building land in the municipal area. In 1991 the Evosmos community had 28,821 inhabitants. In 2001 Evosmos already had 52,624 inhabitants, making it one of the larger cities in Greece.
There are three church buildings in the urban area of Evosmos: Agios Athanasios (oldest from 1821), Evangelismos and Tris Ierarches (new building). Evosmos has a public cinema and a cultural center. In the northern part of Evosmos Nea Politia is the community sports center, where the 2003 preliminary round matches of the junior basketball world championship were played. The local football club Agrotikos Asteras plays in the second Greek football league.
