Menemeni ( Greek Μενεμένη ( f. Sg. )) Is de facto a district west of the center of Thessalonikis and de jure a municipality of the municipality Ambelokipi-Menemeni in the regional district of Thessaloniki in the Greek region of Central Macedonia . Until 2010 it was an independent municipality.
history
When the administrative unit of the municipality of Thessaloniki was founded on May 3, 1918, Menemeni did not yet exist. The Menemeni area belonged to the municipality of Thessaloniki. The existence began in 1922 with the influx of Greek expellees from Asia Minor after the Greek defeat in the Greco-Turkish War from 1912 to 1922 and the subsequent “ population swap ” between the Greek (Greek-Orthodox) population on Turkish territory and agreed in the 1923 Treaty of Lausanne of the Turkish (Muslim) population on Greek territory. In 1926 Menemeni was split off from the municipality of Thessaloniki and assigned to the municipality of Harmanköy (Charmankioi). Just three years later, the Harmankioi community was dissolved again and assigned to the city of Thessaloniki. This administrative reorganization only lasted until 1934: the settlements Neo Charmankioi, Neos Vosporos and Nea Menemeni were combined to form the municipality of Menemeni and split off from the municipality of Thessaloniki. This municipality was merged with the neighboring Ambelokipi in 2010 , whereby the two municipalities continue to exist as municipal districts. The seat of the new community is in Ambelokipi.
Population, administration and politics
In the years 1981 to 2001, the municipality recorded an increase in inhabitants analogous to many other municipalities and localities in the Thessaloniki metropolitan region. The increase mainly took place in the 1990s. In 1981 there were 12,414 people in Menemeni, 12,932 in 1991, 15,133 in 2001 and 14,746 in 2011 (data determined by population censuses). The municipality of Menemeni consists of the quarters Vosporos, Agios Nektarios, Agia Varvara and Lachanokipi.
Menemeni has a twinning relationship with the Turkish city of Menemen in the province of Izmir .
traffic
The public transport in Menemeni is carried out by the buses of the OASTh (ΟΑΣΘ; Organismos Astikon Sygkoinonion Thessalonikis, local transport company of Thessaloniki). The extension of the metro, which is currently under construction, from Thessaloniki to Menemeni is under discussion.
