Stavroupoli ( Greek Σταυρούπολη ( f. Sg. )) Is a city and suburb of the city of Thessaloniki in the Greek region of Central Macedonia . 1934 as rural community (kinotita) detached from the municipality of Thessaloniki and 1963 township (dimos) levied Stavroupoli was with the administrative reform in 2010 with neighboring cities Polichni and Efkarpia the new municipality Pavlos Melas combined, in which it represents the administrative center and otherwise forms a district .

Stavroupoli is located in the west-northwest of the Thessaloniki metropolitan area. Sometimes it is also referred to as the western gate of the city of Thessaloniki. To the east Stavroupoli borders on the municipality of Kordelio-Evosmos , in the south on the municipality of Ambelokipi-Menemeni and the city of Thessaloniki itself. Half of the settlement area or district of Ilioupoli (Ano Ilioupoli) belongs to the municipality of Stavroupoli . The other half belongs to the Evosmos parish . There are no visible boundaries or distinctions between the individual cities in the Thessaloniki metropolitan area - except in rare cases with corresponding street signs. Rather, the visual impression of a single city is shown (analogous to the situation in the Ruhr area).

As in other suburbs and cities in the Thessaloniki metropolitan area, the population increased significantly in the 1990s. Stavroupoli had 37,596 inhabitants in 1991, but in 2001 the population was 43,576. The last census in 2011 showed a resident population of 46,008 souls. The resulting population density on the 3.18 km² area of the city is 14,490.7 inhabitants per square kilometer. This makes Stavroupoli one of the most densely populated cities in Greece.

Parts of the urban area of Stavroupoli are occupied by the Pavlos Melas barracks of the Greek army. National Road 2 runs through Stavroupoli from the city of Thessaloniki to Kavala (Odos Langadas). In the north of the city the inner ring road runs around Thessaloniki. Stavroupoli only has a rail connection indirectly via the Thessaloniki train station. It is planned to extend the Thessaloniki metro , which is under construction, from the current western terminus of the train station to Stavroupoli. Local public transport is currently carried out exclusively by OASTH buses.

There are two monasteries in the area of the city of Stavroupoli: the Lazarist monastery ( Greek Μονής των Λαζαριστών ), which now houses the State Museum of Contemporary Art , and the Adelfon tis Efsplachnias monastery ( Greek μονδαλαίςτφη τωών . Stavroupoli also has a city park. The psychiatric hospital for the Thessaloniki Metropolitan Area is also located in the urban area of Stavroupoli. The educational sector is represented in the Stavroupoli area with kindergartens, elementary schools, secondary schools and vocational schools.
