Location in the Central Macedonia region

Peonia ( Greek Παιονία ( f. Sg. )) Is a Greek municipality in the north of the Central Macedonia region , which has existed since January 1, 2011. The approximately 28,000 inhabitants are distributed over the administrative seat Polykastro (7056 Ew.), The small towns Goumenissa (3609 Ew.), Axioupoli (3049 Ew.) And Evropos (1737 Ew.) And 27 local communities. The name is derived from the ancient landscape of Paionien .

Peonia lies on both sides of the Axios River , which flows south from the adjacent North Macedonia and whose valley widens in the south of the municipality to the Central Macedonian Plain. In the west, the Paiko massif separates Peonia from Almopia , while the municipality of Kilkis borders the municipality to the east . Southern neighboring communities are Pella and Chalkidona .

The Goumenissa wine region is located in the municipality .

Community structure

Until 1997, today's districts were independent municipalities in the prefecture of Kilkis, which was divided into the provinces of Peonia and Kilkis. From 1997 to 2010 the municipalities of the Peonia Province were merged into four municipalities, the Polykastro municipality belonged to the Kilkis Province. These five municipalities were merged to form the new municipality of Peonia as part of the 2010 administrative reform .

The communities that existed until 1997 have had the status of urban districts (Ez. Gr. Dimotiki kinotita δημοτική κοινότητα) or local communities ( topiki kinotita τοπική κοινότητα) and elect their own local representatives. The population figures come from the results of the 2011 census.

In the municipality is the Idomeni border station on the Thessaloniki – Idomeni railway line , which opened in 1872 and crosses the border to North Macedonia here . Polykastro train station is also in the municipal area. There is hardly any passenger traffic on the route, currently (2020) only one pair of trains runs here, the Hellas Express from Belgrade to Thessaloniki - and only during the summer season. Otherwise only goods traffic takes place here. "Peonia" is also the name of an operating point on the route ( route kilometers 56.7).
