history

Crane in the realm of Todor Svetoslav

Crane lies on the edge of the Valley of the Thracian Kings . The former Thracian capital Seuthopolis is nearby .

The history of today's crane is closely linked to the medieval town and fortress of the same name, the remains of which can be seen above the present-day village. The fortress was important in the Second Bulgarian Empire. They protect the Strait of Thrace, which led over the passes of the Balkan Mountains to the Bulgarian capital Tarnowo . In the 12th century, the place became part of the autonomous principality Despotat Kran and family property of the Tsar Mizo Assen . In the 12th century, crane was captured by Konstantin Tich Assen in the course of the Bulgarian civil war , who became tsar and handed over the despotate to his son-in-law, the later tsar Smilez (1292–1298).

At the end of the 13th century and beginning of the 14th century, the Smilez property was conquered by his successor, Todor Svetoslav . Smilez's family, his brothers ( Radoslaw and Wojsil ), his wife and son Ivan Smilez then fled to Byzantium. Todor Swetoslaw's uncle, Eltimir, was installed as the despot of Kran.

In 1302 the Byzantine emperor Andronikos II supported the Sebastokrator Radoslaw, brother of Smilez, militarily and financially , in order to assert his claim to despotate. However, Radoslaw was defeated, captured and blinded by Eltimir on behalf of the Tsar. In 1305 Eltimir tried to gain autonomy, but was defeated by Todor Svetoslav. The areas of the despotate were subordinated directly to the Bulgarian tsar.

Crane probably fell into the hands of the Ottoman Turks in 1387, before Tarnovo was conquered in 1393 . After the fall of Krans, the city and the fortress were destroyed. As a result, some Turkish families (probably Derwendschi ) settled in the valley below the former settlement, which guarded the nearby pass.

After the liberation of Bulgaria , Kran belonged to the autonomous Ottoman province of Eastern Rumelia until 1885. It was not until the unification of Bulgaria that Kran became part of the Bulgarian principality .

Until December 21, 1906 the place was called Hasat. He has been the namesake of the crane peninsula on Liège Island in Antarctica since 2013 .
