The steady increase in the population in recent decades is largely due to the proximity to the city of Nantes and the comparatively low rents and land prices.
economy
For centuries, the local economy was geared towards the self-sufficiency of the population. With the growth of the population of Nantes, there was also production for the local markets, but this was not easy to do because of the distance. Today, some farmers still farm, but most of the arable land is used for viticulture: The Muscadet-Côtes de Grandlieu has received its own Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée ( AOC ) since 1994 . Of the around 120 fishermen in the Passay district at the beginning of the 20th century, only seven are left.
history
In the Middle Ages, the place belonged to the feudal lordship of the Huguetières , who built a castle ( château ) near Passay in the 15th century , but nothing has survived .
Attractions
- The parish church of Saint Martin is a neo-Gothic building from the 19th century with an imposing west tower.
- The Château de la Freudière dates from the 18th and 19th centuries; it is privately owned and has been recognized as a monument historique since 1990 .
- Only a small part of the Lac de Grand Lieu, which is about 65 square kilometers in size, just above sea level and correspondingly flat, is located in the municipality of La Chevrolière. Along with Lac du Bourget , it is the largest natural lake in France in terms of area. In winter the surface of the lake is about twice as large as in summer due to more rainfalls and less evaporation. Fauna (eels, fish, birds, etc.) and flora (reeds, water lilies, etc.) of the lake are under nature protection: only some licensed fishermen are allowed to fish on the lake; hunting is completely forbidden , also because of the lead cartridges that poison the soil . In the absence of access roads, visitors to the area hardly get to see the lake - that is why an Ecomusée has been set up in the Passay district .
