Marina in the old port of Nort-sur-Erdre |
Nort-sur-Erdre is a French municipality with 8763 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Loire-Atlantique in the Region Pays de la Loire .
geography
Nort-sur-Erdre is located on the lower reaches of the Erdre river , which has many lake-like widenings up to its confluence with the Loire near Nantes and thus offers a diverse water landscape. The river is navigable by ships and about five kilometers below Nort-sur-Erdre is connected to the Canal de Nantes à Brest , on which a connection to the canal and river system of Brittany is made possible.
The place has a train station on the Nantes – Châteaubriant railway line .
history
Saint Felix, the 16th Bishop of Nantes , restored the unhealthy marshland north of the city in 550 by raising the water level of the Erdre by about two meters by building river barriers and roads.
This also made shipping to Nort-sur-Erdre possible, which was to be of great importance for the economic development of this city. Once a very important industrial port, the factories have long since disappeared from the landscape.
Today, the Erdre's water landscape is mainly used for leisure and tourism; there is a charter base for houseboats in the port of Nort-sur-Erdre .
