Pieter Egge Huistra (born January 18, 1967 in Goënga , Netherlands ) is a Dutch former football player and current coach . He played in the Eredivisie for FC Twente , in the Belgian First Division for Lierse SK , in the J. League for Sanfrecce Hiroshima and was five times Scottish champion with the Rangers from Glasgow . Eight times he was also used in the Dutch national team.
Club career
Huistra came from the youth of the Drachtster Boys , an amateur club from Drachten . At the age of 16 he went to FC Groningen . The left winger made his professional debut in the 1984/85 season: on September 5, 1984, the 17-year-old came on against FC Volendam in the 60th minute for Anne Mulder, who was ten years older . The young Frisian played here with Adri van Tiggelen , Erwin Koeman and FC Groningen veteran Jan van Dijk . He scored his first goal on November 3, 1984. Huistra came on in the 84th minute and made the equalizer for 1: 1 at AZ as the “Joker” . But he could not conquer a regular place and was loaned to newly promoted BV Veendam for the 1986/87 season, where his Groningen teammates Anne Mulder and Harris Huizingh also moved. Here he was part of the regular formation from the start of the season and scored five goals in 33 games this season. Nevertheless, the Veendamer had to return to the Eerste Divisie at the end of the season . Huistra should now actually return to the green and white team in Groningen. However, he had caught the attention of Kees Rijvers , the ex-coach and now technical director of FC Twente , who brought him to Enschede .
Rijvers formed a team around goalkeepers Theo Snelders , Fred Rutten , Mika Lipponen and Theo ten Caat with the young Andy Scharmin and Huistra, which - after starting the season with one point from six games - reached third place in the table at the end of the season. FC Twente finished third in the Eredivisie, behind Ajax and PSV ; Huistra was one of the guarantors of success on the left wing: in his three years at FC Twente the club came third three times; Huistra scored 17 goals in 93 league games, played in the UEFA Cup and became a national player .
For the 1990/91 season he followed Snelders to the Scottish Premier League . Snelders played for Aberdeen FC ; Huistra joined the Rangers from Glasgow . The club had become champions twice in a row with coach Graeme Souness ; during Huistra's first season he was replaced by Walter Smith . Huistra became a permanent part of the team, which had a prosperous period: during his five years there, the Rangers became champions five more times in a row; Huistra played in the European Cup and the Champions League . The former Dutch international Wim Jansen , manager of Sanfrecce Hiroshima , brought Huistra to Japan in the J. League in 1995 . In Hiroshima he played until the end of the 1996 season; in the winter of 1996/97 he then rejoined his ex-club Groningen for the rest of the season.
For the 1997/98 season Huistra went to the Belgian First Division for Lierse SK . Here he was active for two years before he could no longer compete due to a severe Achilles tendon injury . His contract in Lier ran for another year and he stayed fit with training at RBC Roosendaal without having a contract there, but did not come back on the field. After 394 top division games in four countries, in which he scored 71 goals, Huistras ended 16 years of professional career.

National team
After winning the European Championship in 1988 , Thijs Libregts replaced Rinus Michels as bond coach for the Dutch Elftal . While Libregts let more experienced players go in the first two games after the European Championship, the two matches in the World Cup qualification against Wales and the DFB selection , he was able to test young players in the subsequent friendly matches. On November 16, 1988 he sent four debutants onto the pitch in the Olympic Stadium in Rome with Huistra, Rob Reekers from Bochum , René Eijkelkamp from FC Groningen and Enscheder Fred Rutten, who was substituted in the second half ; In addition, there were two players, Adick Koot from PSV and also substitute Kerkrader John van Loen , who had previously only played a brief stint in the Elftal . The newly thrown together team lost 1-0 to the Italians , but did not deliver a bad game. Libregts also occupied the left wing position of Oranje with Huistra in the next few games , including in what, in retrospect, was the "most important and exciting game" in the national team. On April 26, 1989, the Netherlands met their old rivals Germany again in De Kuip in the World Cup qualification for the second leg. With a goal from Karlheinz Riedle , the hosts were 1-0 down after 70 minutes; Marco van Basten's compensation fell after Huistra had already been substituted.
In the winter of 1989/90, a groin injury threw Huistra back, and he was only able to return to the game in March 1990 - too late to be called back to the national team. Although he was shortlisted for the World Cup squad, he did not make it into the final 22-man squad for Italy, which in his opinion also had something to do with the change in the coaching position from Libregts to Leo Beenhakker , the player from Ajax preferred. It was not until April 1991, when Huistra was already successful in Glasgow, that national coach Rinus Michels appointed him again to the team. In the European Championship qualification , he was used in both games against Finland ; then he made his last international match against Poland on September 11, 1991 at the Philips Stadium in Eindhoven .
Trainer
After his active career, Huistra became a coach. While he was still hoping to get back on the field at RBC, he received the offer from the KNVB to work as Arno Pijpers' assistant for the Dutch U-17 national team at the 2000 European Championship in Israel, where the team finished third . He then worked for a while as an assistant coach for the Hong Kong national team , where he was also responsible for the U-17 team. A year later he returned to what he considered to be the “most important club” that had been “the basis for his further career”: he became a youth coach at FC Groningen. From 2005 he was assistant coach of Aad de Mos at Vitesse Arnhem . In 2009 he was a short-term replacement for the injured Rob Witschge coach assistant at AFC Ajax. He was employed by the Amsterdam team for the 2009/10 season as coach of the second team Jong Ajax and thus as the successor to Adrie Koster . In December 2009, his commitment as head coach of FC Groningen for the 2010/11 season was announced. In the 2010/11 season he led the team to fifth place, but missed participation in the European Cup on penalties in the playoffs. His contract was valid until the end of the 2012/13 season, but after he had only 14th place in the table with FC in the 2011/12 season and thus again failed to reach the European competition season goal , the club prematurely ended the cooperation in May 2012. In total, Huistra was on the sidelines in 68 league games for Groningen, 27 of which were won. For the 2012/13 season he took over the coaching position at the relegated De Graafschap in the Eerste Divisie .
