Orlando Engelaar (born August 24, 1979 in Rotterdam , Netherlands ) is a former Dutch football player .

Career

society

Engelaar's family comes from Suriname . His father was also a soccer player and was a central defender at SV Robinhood in Paramaribo .

Orlando Engelaar was born in Rotterdam, grew up in Rotterdam-Zuid within walking distance of De Kuip and played in Feyenoord's youth at the age of seven . He went through all youth teams and played in the club's second team. He was also active for Henk ten Cates “Suriprofs” team, a selection of Dutch professionals of Surinamese descent; his achievements in this team earned the 20-year-old a professional contract with NAC Breda in the summer of 2000 . On August 19, 2000 he made his debut in the Eredivisie in the left midfield of the NAC in the home game against RKC Waalwijk . After his second match, he had to take the first of several injury-related breaks. Because of these injuries, he stayed in the team around the experienced Alfred Schreuder in the first two seasons and did not make more than 33 appearances. Although he was used in the attacking midfield and several times in the attack of the NAC, he had to wait more than two years for his first league goal: On September 14, 2002 he scored a "double" for a 2-0 victory at SC Heerenveen . His third and fourth Eredivisie goals came within one game, three weeks later in a 2-2 draw against PSV Eindhoven . His third season was with eight more, a total of twelve, goals in 33 league games, his most successful season at NAC; fourth in the championship, Breda qualified for the UEFA Cup . The following season he reached the semi-finals of the Dutch Cup with NAC Breda.

After Engelaar appeared again for Breda in the league in the 2004/05 season and scored a goal against FC Utrecht , he moved to KRC Genk in the Belgian First Division . Reporters from the Nieuwsblad attested him a performance with "flowing dribbling and fine ball handling that one would not expect from a 1.96 meter tall boy". He stayed in Genk in Limburg for two years, reached third place with the club in his first season and fifth in the 2005/06 season and played internationally in UI and UEFA Cups. After four games in the 2006/07 season, he moved back to the Netherlands for FC Twente Enschede . With Twente he qualified for the UEFA Cup in 2006 via the UEFA Intertoto Cup . He became team captain under coach Fred Rutten and played a more defensive role than at his previous clubs.

When Rutten moved to FC Schalke 04 in the German Bundesliga for the 2008/09 season , the long midfielder, who had meanwhile become a national player, followed him to Gelsenkirchen in July 2008. But he could not meet the expectations at Schalke. Although he scored an important goal in the UEFA Cup match at Racing Santander on November 6, 2008 , he failed to score in 25 Bundesliga games and was sent off twice. The German press saw his obligation as a "transfer misunderstanding"; in the Netherlands, his time in Gelsenkirchen was described as a “failed adventure”. His nickname "The Controller", which was still used at the beginning of the season, caused a lot of malice due to his mixed performance. In fan circles he was often ridiculed as the "lame duck of Twente".

For the 2009/10 season Engelaar hit a lucrative offer from Panathinaikos Athens and instead moved back to the Eredivisie for PSV Eindhoven . His main reason for this was the hope of being able to return to the national team for the 2010 World Cup with convincing games in the honor division under constant observation by Bondscoach Bert van Marwijk . In Eindhoven he trained under Fred Rutten, as he did in Enschede and Gelsenkirchen . In the 2009/10 season , despite problems with the Achilles tendon , which had been operated on before the winter break, he scored two goals in 28 league appearances. In the Europa League he made ten games, including the two encounters against Hamburger SV , in which PSV were eliminated due to the away goals rule . The team qualified again as third of the season for the Europa League . In the following season he succeeded Ibrahim Afellay as team captain of the PSV team. Due to financial difficulties of the association, the salaries had to be cut; Engelaar was suggested to look for a new club, but found no new employer. In Eindhoven, according to club director Tiny Sanders, he ended up "on the sidelines". In the 2011/12 season Engelaar sustained an ankle injury that put him out of action for months. He was only used 13 times this season, four times in the 2012/13 season . His contract was not extended thereafter.

At the beginning of the 2013/14 season he was without a club and a short time later moved to the Australian A-League at Melbourne Heart, which was coached by his compatriot John van 't Schip . At the beginning of the following season Engelaar was back in the Netherlands, but initially remained again without a new employer; At the beginning of September 2014, the now 35-year-old trained with his former club FC Twente in Enschede in the hope of a new contract. A month later, Engelaar signed a contract until the end of the season. After this contract was not renewed, Engelaar officially ended his active career in September 2015.

National team

Engelaar joined the Dutch national team late . He was already 28 years old when he was invited to the Oranje team on a trip to the Far East after his first successful season in Enschede . Bondscoach Marco van Basten used the games in South Korea and Thailand to determine the current situation at the halfway point of the European Championship qualification . Substitute goalkeepers Henk Timmer and Maarten Stekelenburg as well as Demy de Zeeuw , who had only played for 15 minutes in Oranje, played alongside veterans like Rafael van der Vaart , Giovanni van Bronckhorst , Denny Landzaat and Wesley Sneijder in the two games . They also made their debuts in the first match in Seoul on June 2, 2007 against South Korea , Andwelé Slory and Engelaar, who came on for Sneijder in the 63rd minute. Four days later he was substituted on again in the game against Thailand .

Although Engelaar had only had another brief assignment in November 2007, van Basten appointed him to the squad for the European Championships in Austria and Switzerland in May 2008 . Engelaar benefited from the fact that van Basten played the same system as Fred Rutten at Twente. For the first time he was there as a defensive midfielder on May 24, 2008 in the 3-0 win against Ukraine in the starting line-up of the national team and also played in the last two test matches before the European Championship . During the European Championship he was in all group matches and in the lost quarter-finals. After the European Championship, van Bassen's successor Bert van Marwijk decided not to use the new Schalke in the first team because of his “poor performance”. Engelaar was substituted on for the national team only once during his Bundesliga season, in November 2008 against Sweden . Eleven months later he made his comeback as a PSV player, but only with two short appearances in October and November 2009. In the World Cup year, he did not get any match practice in van Marwijk's team until mid-May, but was one of the 30 players who expanded Formed squads for the World Cup in South Africa . At the presentation of the final 23-man squad for the World Cup, however, van Marwijk announced that he would not take Engelaar with him to South Africa.
