Cornelius "Cees" Claudius Henricus van Ierssel (born December 6, 1945 in Breda , Netherlands ) is a former Dutch football player . He was once Dutch runner-up and once cup winner with FC Twente and reached the 1975 UEFA Cup final . With the national team he was runner-up in 1974.

Club career

Van Ierssel played in the 1960s with his brothers in the third-rate VV Baronie from his hometown Breda, where his father had also been active. But Cees wanted to go higher and was put on the transfer list in 1969. Coach Kees Rijvers brought the talented player to FC Twente in Enschede . Here he was first used in midfield, then in central defense, before he found his regular place as right full-back . Together with goalkeeper Piet Schrijvers and their defensive colleagues Epi Drost , Kalle Oranen and Willem de Vries , the Enscheder had a defense that helped FC Twente to its successful "Golden Seventies". After fourth place in 1970, fifth place in 1971 and twice third place, the team came close to champions in the 1973/74 season , only a 2: 3 away defeat in De Kuip on one of the last game days against eventual champions Feyenoord prevented the title . In the 1971/72 season , the defense around van Ierssel and Drost set a record that still stands in 2009: with 13 goals, the team received the fewest goals conceded over the season that a team in the Eredivisie had to accept.

Van Ierssel and FC Twente also made a name for themselves internationally, as the Enscheders played a good role in the European cup competitions during these years. In the 1971 trade fair cup they only failed in the quarter-finals against Juventus Turin and in the 1973 UEFA Cup only in the semi-finals against Borussia Mönchengladbach . Two years later, van Ierssel was with Eddy Achterberg and Frans Thijssen , with Arnold Mühren , Epi Drost and Volkmar Groß in the team that eliminated Juventus Turin in the semi-finals and only failed in the final against Borussia Mönchengladbach. In the same year the team lost the cup final against FC Den Haag .

Two years after the lost final it should finally work with a title: On Ascension Day 1977 he played with Twente in Nijmegen in the KNVB Cup final. After 90 minutes it was 0-0 against PEC Zwolle ; Twente won 3-0 after extra time. In the following season he reached the semi-finals with the team in the European Cup Winners' Cup , in which FC Twente were eliminated with two defeats against RSC Anderlecht . In a total of 39 out of 40 possible UEFA Cup games, van Ierssel was there, scoring his only "international" goal in 1973 against Panahaiki Patras . He also played all eight games in the European Cup Winners' Cup. In the honor division he played 290 times for FC Twente, scoring 14 goals.

After ten years at FC Twente, van Ierssel went to the second division Heracles Almelo in 1979 , where he played in the Eerste Divisie for another three years . He then practiced his learned profession as an administrative clerk again until his retirement, at the same time he continued to play football at the amateur club Quick '20 for a while .

National team

In the 1973/74 season van Ierssel became a national player. He replaced his club-mate Epi Drost in the Oranje jersey: Drost sustained a serious injury after his last international match on September 12, 1973; in the next match against Poland on October 10, 1973 van Ierssel was in the squad for the first time and was substituted on; he came on in the 78th minute for Johan Neeskens , when the 1-1 result was already clear. Under bond coach Rinus Michels , he took part in the preparatory games for the 1974 World Cup in Germany and was also part of the Dutch squad at the World Cup, but remained unused; he was only allowed to sit on the bench in the first game against Uruguay . After the World Cup, he was used in a European Championship qualifier against Finland and a friendly against Switzerland on October 9, 1974 , before his career in Orange ended after a year.
