Eddy Achterberg (born February 21, 1947 in Utrecht ) is a former Dutch football player and coach .
Career
Achterberg turned professional at the age of 15 when he signed a contract with DOS . In 1967 he went to FC Twente Enschede and completed 246 games in the Eredivisie for Enschede by 1976 . The midfielder scored 26 goals. He played 27 times (3 goals) with Twente in European Cup competitions, including in the 1972/73 and 1973/74 UEFA Cup when the team lost to Borussia Mönchengladbach only in the semi-finals and in the final . After a broken leg in 1974 he came back, but never found his old strength. In October 1976 he moved to FC Groningen , where he ended his career in 1978. Achterberg was never used in the national team , but was on the reserve bench at a game of Elftal .
After the end of his active career, he became a representative of a German sporting goods manufacturer and innkeeper. From 1988 he worked first as a youth coach and later as an assistant coach at Twente Enschede. He moved to Roda Kerkrade in 1993 , where he was assistant coach to Huub Stevens . After Stevens moved to FC Schalke 04 , Achterberg briefly took over the job of head coach before he followed Stevens to the Bundesliga club. In 1997 he won the UEFA Cup with Schalke . In 2000 he went back to Twente Enschede, where he won the KNVB-Beker as Fred Rutten's assistant coach . After an interlude as coach of the second team from Twente, he made his second commitment in Gelsenkirchen from 2003 to 2005. From September 15 (dismissal of Jupp Heynckes ) to September 28, 2004 ( Ralf Rangnick signed on ) he briefly acted as interim trainer for FC Schalke 04. From 2005 to 2009, Achterberg was a scout for the Bundesliga club. For the 2009/10 season he was again assistant coach of Huub Stevens at the Austrian Bundesliga club FC Red Bull Salzburg .
Others
In Enschede, Achterberg's nickname was De Keu ("the (billiard) cue "). However, the name goes back to "het keutje" , as it was called in Utrecht. In the local dialect this is an expression for “piggy”. Achterberg: “I got it precisely because the name doesn't suit me at all. My friends always said to me: Here comes 'de Keu', the fat pig with the crooked legs. ” De Keu was also the name of a restaurant that Achterberg ran.
As a “singer”, Achterberg, supported by other players and fans of FC Twente, recorded a song in the successful 1973/74 season with the title “Eenmaal zullen wij de kampioenen zijn” (“Once we will be the champions”) advanced to the unofficial club song of the Enscheder.
