Theo Vonk (born December 16, 1947 in Uitgeest ) is a former Dutch football player and coach.

Player career

Vonk played ten years for AZ'67 Alkmaar . He made his debut in the 1968/69 season. With the club he established himself among the top Dutch clubs. However, he had to wait until 1978 for his first national success. Back then, on May 5, 1978, the AZ'67 reached the final of the KNVB Cup . There they faced Ajax Amsterdam , which the team was able to defeat 1-0 with a goal from Van Rijnsoever . After this success Vonk moved to FC Volendam for a year . After seventh place in the Eredivisie , he ended his active football career.

Coaching career

After his active career, Vonk returned to AZ Alkmaar. There he was assistant trainer for five years and assisted George Kessler , Hans Eijkenbroek and Piet de Visser . For the 1984/85 season he was finally given the opportunity to become head coach at Sparta Rotterdam . In its first season, the team reached fourth place. To date (as of 2009) a better ranking has never been achieved. The following year it was only seventh.

In 1987 Vonk signed with league rivals FC Twente Enschede . There he had five successful years, reached third place three times in a row (1988-1990) and qualified with the club in the 1990/91 and 1991/92 seasons for the UEFA Cup . However, titles were not won. In the summer of 1992 the two parties separated again. Vonk then decided to go abroad. The Spanish club Real Burgos , then in the Primera División , hired the football teacher. When the club got economic problems and a forced relegation to the third division was decided, Vonk moved back to the Netherlands.

After a brief appearance at FC Groningen , his home club hired him, now renamed AZ Alkmaar , which was only second class. In 1996, the club made number one in the Eerste Divisie and rose to the Eredivisie. But this success was short-lived and you quickly found yourself in the table cellar. So it came about that Vonk was fired and temporarily replaced by Martin Haar . The club later relegated.

Further coaching jobs followed at Roda Kerkrade (March to June 1998) and Heracles Almelo . In 2000 Vonk occupied the managerial position at FC Twente Enschede, but only held it for a short time. In the meantime he worked as a scout for various European clubs (including West Ham United ). Between 2003 and 2004 he was in charge of the Eintracht Nordhorn team . At the end of 2004, after disagreements with the board, he resigned as Eintracht's trainer. In 2007 he moved to Enschede again, where he became the head coach of the reserve team. In 2008 he got down with the team from the Zondag hoofd class C , the highest class for Dutch amateur teams.
