Niels Overweg (born May 15, 1948 in Amsterdam ) is a former Dutch football player and coach .

Player career

society

At the age of nineteen Overweg was part of the professional squad of the then Eredivisie representative AFC DWS for the 1967/68 season . At the Amsterdam club, the defender made regular appearances in his first year as a professional, but was not yet part of the regular squad. Only in the following year did Overweg make the breakthrough and until 1972 played more than 31 league games per season. During this time, the defensive player was able to gain his first international experience and took part in the Messestädte Cup three times with DWS between 1966 and 1968 . After the club merged with other clubs in 1972 and merged to form FC Amsterdam , Overweg moved to league competitor Go Ahead Eagles in the summer of that year . Although he was always a regular player, there was no success under Barry Hughes or later under Jan Notermans . Only when he switched to FC Twente Enschede did Overweg take an important step in his career. He was struggling with good competition there, but mostly prevailed. In seven years in Enschede, the team achieved fourth place in the league three times. The biggest triumph was in the KNVB Cup , which they won 3-0 against PEC Zwolle in 1976/77 . Overweg was in the final with the team two years earlier, but had to admit defeat against FC Den Haag 1-0. International attention was drawn when the FCT made it to the final of the UEFA Cup in 1974/75 . There Overweg and his team met the German representative Borussia Mönchengladbach . After a 0-0 away game, the team lost 5-1 in front of their home crowd. Overweg was on the field for the full playing time in both games. In the summer of 1981 Overweg moved to the Eerste Divisie in Drechtsteden'79 after a successful time at Twente . After two years he ended his active career.

National team

In 1975 Overwerg completed four games in the dress of the Netherlands under the then bond coach George Knobel . The defender made his debut on May 17, 1975 when he was substituted on for Frans Thijssen at halftime in the game against West Germany . The game ended in a 1-1 draw. In a 1: 4 defeat against Poland , after which Overweg was heavily criticized, the defensive player made his last international match.

Success as a player

Coaching career

After his active career, Overweg went into the coaching business. Between 1986 and 1987 he coached the Dutch club Vitesse Arnheim with Hans Dorjee . After a three-year break, Overweg looked after the lower-class club Telstar from Velsen from 1990 to 1993 . In the summer of 1993 he was replaced there by Simon Kistemaker . In the 1994/95 season he temporarily replaced Fritz Korbach at SC Cambuur-Leeuwarden as an interim coach , but was soon replaced by Han Berger . Nine years later he was there again as a youth coach. In 2006 Overweg coached the SC Franeker amateur team .
