David Raymond Carney (born November 30, 1983 in Sydney ) is an Australian football player . The midfielder has been under contract with the Spanish club AD Alcorcón since 2011 after stints in England, Scotland, Australia and the Netherlands .

Club career

First professional years until 2005

At the age of 16, Carney was accepted into the youth academy of Everton FC , where he played alongside Wayne Rooney, among others . In 2002 he was with the youth team in the final of the FA Youth Cup , which was lost to the offspring of Aston Villa with 2: 4 on a two-way leg. After he did not get a new contract with Everton FC, he left the club in 2003 and was subsequently under contract with Oldham Athletic , Halifax Town and Hamilton Academical before he decided to return to Australia in 2005.

Sydney FC, 2005-2007

Carney completed a trial session at Sydney FC , which competed in the newly formed professional league A-League in 2005 , and received a one-year contract from coach Pierre Littbarski . He scored two goals in the successful Australian qualification for the OFC Club Championship 2004/05 and then, as expected, won the continental tournament with Sydney, which qualified for the 2005 FIFA Club World Cup . At the Club World Cup, he scored the 2-1 winner in the game for 5th place against al Ahly Cairo .

In the 2005/06 season Carney was a regular at Sydney, completed all 21 games of the regular season and was also in all three games of the final round, including the 1-0 victory in the final over the Central Coast Mariners on the field. His performances at Sydney then attracted interest from some European clubs, including Alemannia Aachen and Borussia Mönchengladbach. However, after trial training in Europe, he decided against a move and stayed in Australia for another year. Shortly after the start of the 2006/07 season, Carney underwent shoulder surgery that kept him away from the game for nine weeks. When he returned on the twelfth matchday, he scored his only goal of the season. In the final round you failed as defending champion in the minor semi-final .

Return to Europe, 2007–2012

At the end of July 2007, Carney completed a trial training session with the English second division club Sheffield United and then signed a three-year contract. The transfer fee was around £ 50,000. At Sheffield he was a regular member of the regular team until March 2008, but was only used sporadically after that. In late January 2009 Sheffield loaned him to league rivals Norwich City until the end of the season . After Sheffield coach Kevin Blackwell no longer planned with Carney in the 2009/10 season, he switched to the Dutch first division club Twente Enschede at the end of August 2009 . Carney did not manage to secure a regular place at Twente under coach Steve McClaren and came to eight league appearances during the season when Twente won the Dutch championship for the first time.

Although he was part of the regular team under McClaren's successor Michel Preud'homme at the beginning of the 2010/11 season and, among other things, participated in the 1-0 victory in the Supercup against Ajax Amsterdam, he moved to the English first division club FC Blackpool shortly before the end of the transfer deadline . There he made his Premier League debut on September 11, 2010 in a 2-0 away win against Newcastle United , but did not get past Stephen Crainey in the left-back position during the season and the club decided against an extension of after the direct relegation Carney's contract. Carney finally found a new club in mid-October 2011 when he signed a one-year contract with Spanish second division club AD Alcorcón . Carney was only used sporadically at Alcorcón and dissolved his contract after six months and signed a contract in Uzbekistan at Bunyodkor Tashkent a little later .

National team

Carney made his debut for the Australian senior team in February 2006 against Bahrain. He was on the squad at the 2007 Asian Cup when Australia failed to Japan in the quarterfinals. During the tournament he played as a left-back in the last group game and in the quarter-finals. He scored his first goal in the national dress in November 2007 in a friendly against Nigeria. In August 2008 he took part with the Australian Olympic team in the Olympic football tournament in China and was one of the three permitted over 23-year-olds in the Australian squad alongside Archie Thompson and Jade North . He was used over the full distance in all three games in the preliminary round.

National coach Pim Verbeek nominated Carney in the Australian squad for the World Cup in South Africa in the summer of 2010 . After Scott Chipperfield was preferred in the left-back position in the 4-0 defeat in the opening game , Carney was on the starting line-up in the following two games against Ghana (1: 1) and Serbia (2: 1). The move into the round of 16 was missed due to the poorer goal difference against Ghana.
