Theo Janssen (born July 27, 1981 in Arnhem ) is a former Dutch football player .

Career

society

The midfielder began his career in the youth of the amateur club Vitesse 1892 in Arnhem, before moving to SBV Vitesse in 1995. In the 1997/98 season he advanced to the pros, but had to wait until December 9, 1998 for his first appearance in the Eredivisie . In Vitesse's 2-0 win at NAC Breda , he came on for Marián Zeman in the 90th minute . After five seasons, Janssen went to the Belgian first division club KRC Genk for six months in 2003 , but was transferred back to Vitesse during the current season. He played a total of 97 league games for Arnhem, scoring 17 goals before moving Janssen to FC Twente in the summer of 2008 .

With the team from Enschede he was second in the Eredivisie as a regular player; in the 2009/10 season he was one of the guarantors for winning the first championship of FC Twente. In the 2010/11 season Janssen was voted Footballer of the Year . Twente won the cup against their rivals AFC Ajax at the end of the season , but lost the championship on the final matchday in Amsterdam . A few days later, Ajax signed Janssen for two years from the 2011/12 season with the option of one more season. For FC Twente he scored 18 goals in 86 league games, was successful six times in 13 cup games and scored four times in 29 Champions and Europa League games .

Since the 2012/13 season Janssen has been active again for Vitesse Arnhem . After a cruciate ligament rupture in October 2013, he announced his retirement in March 2014.

National team

On August 16, 2006 Theo Janssen made his debut for the Dutch national team in the international match against the Irish national team ; he came on for Stijn Schaars with seven minutes remaining . Two weeks later he played the full distance in the European Championship qualifier against Luxembourg . Then almost four years passed before he came on his third assignment. For the first match after the 2010 World Cup , Bondscoach Bert van Marwijk called him to the squad for the friendly match in Ukraine , in which the players used at the World Cup were missing. Janssen was again in the starting line-up and played alongside a total of seven debutants and other returnees such as Hedwiges Maduro and Urby Emanuelson until the final whistle.
