Stijn Schaars (born January 11, 1984 in Gendt ) is a Dutch football player . He has been playing in the Dutch Eredivisie for SC Heerenveen since the 2016/17 season. He was part of the Dutch national team .

Career

society

Stijn Schaars began playing organized football at the local club De Bataven at the age of six in his hometown of Gendt , where his father Jan Schaars had succeeded as a left winger before he had to quit due to a knee injury. From there, Stijn Schaars switched to the youth team at Vitesse Arnheim . In the C-youth the team under coach Edward Sturing became Dutch champions. But Schaars almost ended his career a little later due to growth problems , but youth coach Theo Bos stuck to him, although he could not play for almost a year.

Schaars' professional career also began with Vitesse, where he was part of the Eredivisie squad since the 2002/03 season. He made his debut in the first eleven under coach Mike Snoei in the KNVB Cup game at Feyenoord in Rotterdam on March 5, 2003, which Vitesse won 3-1 when he came on after 84 minutes for Aleksandar Ranković . Four days later he ran for the first time in the Eredivisie; Against FC Utrecht he came back for Ranković in the 26th minute, but was replaced during the break against French Didier Martel . In his first season, the midfielder , who as a left-footed player preferably plays on the left, but also centrally defensively in the midfield, only made another brief appearance - the competition in midfield was too great with Yevgeny Levtschenko , Theo Janssen or Jan van Halst . In the following season, the junior international played as a regular in the first team of Vitesse; in this as in the next season he made 21 games in the league. He received headlines on the last matchday before the winter break on December 16, 2004, when he turned the match against De Graafschap : Arnhem was already behind after 39 seconds against the team that had previously only won one game of the season, and before half-time ran after in vain. After the break, Schaars first converted a template from Ranković to equalize and five minutes later brought his team onto the winning road with a free kick; Matthew Amoah established the final score of 3: 1. For the 2005/06 season Schaars moved to AZ in Alkmaar , where he was able to establish himself as a regular player in his first season and gain international experience in the UEFA Cup . At the beginning of his second season in Alkmaar he was a national team player before an ankle injury put him out of action for almost a year and a half. <He could not play a single game in the Eredivisie in the 2007/08 season . In the 2008/09 season he came back as a regular player and became one of the guarantors for winning the Dutch championship in 2009. After the 2010/11 season , in which AZ finished fourth after fifth place in the previous season, Schaars moved to Sporting Clube de Portugal . In Lisbon he received a three-year contract. For the 2013/14 season he moved to PSV Eindhoven .

National team

In 2006, Stijn Schaars was with the Dutch U-21 selection junior European champion, where he was the team's captain. Bondscoach Marco van Basten wanted to call him into the squad for the 2006 World Cup , but he had to cancel due to an injury and only played in Oranje after the World Cup on August 16, 2006 in a friendly against Ireland in Dublin . For the A-Team he played six games in 2006; In February 2009 he made a comeback in a friendly against Tunisia in Tunis and was then three times in the starting line-up of Bondscoach Bert van Marwijk . In May 2010 he was appointed to the extended squad for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa .
