Beginnings at home

Alen Halilović, son of Sejad Halilović , began his football training at the Dinamo Zagreb football school. He played in youth B until the end of the 2011/12 season before signing a professional contract with Dinamo Zagreb shortly after his 16th birthday at the end of June 2012. On September 29, 2012 (10th matchday) he was substituted on for Sammir in the 3-1 win at home against Hajduk Split in the 83rd minute and at 16 years and 100 days the youngest first division professional in Croatia. With his goal to 4-1 final score in the 90th minute on October 7, 2012 (11th matchday) in the away game against NK Slaven Belupo Koprivnica , he was also the youngest goalscorer and broke the record of his teammate Mateo Kovačić . On October 24, 2012, he made his debut in the third group game of the Champions League against Paris Saint-Germain when he was substituted on for Kovačić in added time. On April 19, 2013 (28th matchday), five game days before the end of the season, the title win for Dinamo Zagreb and thus the first Croatian championship for Halilović, who was mostly used as a substitute, was certain.

Change to FC Barcelona

For the 2014/15 season , Halilovic moved to the Spanish Segunda División for the second team of FC Barcelona . He signed a contract until June 30, 2019 and cost 2.2 million euros, which increases when Halilović moves up to the first team. On January 15, 2015, Halilović ran for the first time in a competitive game for the first team when he won the 4-0 away win at FC Elche in the second leg of the second leg of the Copa del Rey in the 62nd minute of play for - the also part of the B team - Adama Traoré was substituted on.

On loan in Gijón

At the beginning of the 2015/16 season , Halilović was loaned out to Sporting Gijón for one year in order to collect match practice in the Primera División . He made his debut on August 29, 2015 when he came on for Carlos Carmona Bonet in the 55th minute of the game against Real Sociedad .

Short guest appearance at HSV

For the 2016/17 season , Halilović did not return to Barcelona, but moved to the Bundesliga for five million euros for Hamburger SV , where he received a four-year contract dated June 30, 2020. The FC Barcelona was a buyback option in the amount of ten million euros and after the third year of the contract a right of first refusal to after the first two years of the contract. Halilović, who was considered a great talent at the time and was also referred to in the media as "Mini Messi ", was hired under great expectations, which he was unable to meet.

Halilović made his competitive debut in the first round of the DFB Cup against FSV Zwickau when he came on for Nicolai Müller in the 63rd minute . Seven minutes after being substituted on, he scored his first goal for HSV. He made his first Bundesliga appearance on matchday 1 in a 1-1 draw against FC Ingolstadt 04 , when he came back for Müller in the 66th minute. Initially brought under Bruno Labbadia as a substitute, he only came on a substitute under the new coach Markus Gisdol and his only starting eleven on matchday 8, in which he was substituted in the second half, so that for him six Bundesliga appearances without a goal or template as well said trophy bet (one goal) is recorded. After Halilović had already not been considered for the matchday squad under Labbadia, he was no longer considered from the 9th matchday under Gisdol until his departure after the end of the first half of the season. In addition, he temporarily failed with a ligament stretch in his knee.

Return to Spain

After Halilović was no longer considered at HSV, he returned to the Spanish Primera División at the end of January 2017 and joined the UD Las Palmas on loan for a year and a half . According to the UD Las Palmas, the contract includes a purchase option. By the end of the 2016/17 season , Halilović had made 18 league appearances - mostly as a substitute - in which he failed to score. In September 2017 Halilović injured his left ankle and could not be used again until mid-January 2018. In the 2017/18 season , he made 20 league appearances - now mostly in the starting line-up - and scored two goals. At the end of the season he relegated with his team to the Segunda División and left the club when his contract expired.

Between Milan, Liège and Heerenveen

For the 2018/19 season , Halilović did not return to Hamburger SV, who had been relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga , but switched to the Italian Serie A at AC Milan . He signed a contract that ran until June 30, 2021. Under coach Gennaro Gattuso , Halilović was not used in the league. In the Europa League , he made two appearances in the group stage against Luxembourg representative F91 Dudelange and against Olympiacos Piraeus (two short appearances, one starting eleven).

At the end of January 2019, Halilović moved on loan to Belgian first division club Standard Liège for a year and a half , who has a purchase option. By the end of the season he had 14 league appearances (including 5 in the starting line-up) without scoring his own.

After Halilović had not played at the beginning of the 2019/20 season , the loan contract was terminated at the beginning of September, whereupon he switched to the Dutch first division club SC Heerenveen on loan until the end of the season . The Eredivisie season could not be continued in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic and was later canceled. At this point in time, SC Heerenveen had played 26 games. Halilović made 17 league appearances and scored one goal. However, he could not establish himself again as a regular player and was only in the starting line-up in 4 games.

In preparation for the 2020/21 season , Halilović returned to AC Milan, who has been coached by Stefano Pioli since October 2019 .

National team

Halilović played in Croatia's U14, U15, U16 and U17 teams between 2010 and 2013 . With the U17 he took part in the 2013 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates , where he was used in all three group games.

However, whether he would also play for the country's senior team or for that of Bosnia-Herzegovina was unclear for a long time. In May 2013 he was nominated for the first time for the senior national team by the Croatian national coach Igor Štimac . Halilović himself said shortly afterwards in an interview that "he never had any doubts" about which association he would play for. On June 10, 2013, he made his debut in Geneva in the 1-0 defeat in the international test match against Portugal and has since become the youngest Croatian international.

From October 2014 to June 2019, Halilović was also used in the U-21 selection . He played 17 games in which he scored 4 goals. He played his last game at the 2019 European Under-21 Championship , when Croatia was eliminated in the group stage.
