Nico-Jan Hoogma (born October 26, 1968 in Heerenveen ) is a former Dutch football player . The defender became known because of his long activity at Hamburger SV , whose captain Hoogma was temporarily after 2001.

Hoogma has been Sports Director at the Dutch Football Association (KNVB) since February 2018 .

Player career

Hoogma began his professional football career in the early 1990s with the Dutch club Cambuur Leeuwarden . For the 1992/93 season he moved to the honor division club Twente Enschede . In the six years at Twente, Hoogma has always been able to assert himself as a regular player and made a total of 187 league (18 goals) and ten European Cup appearances (no goal).

Because of his excellent defensive performance, the HSV took notice of him and finally signed him in September 1998. He was also a regular at the Hanseatic League for the entire six years of his stay and a supporter of the defense; from 2001 as captain of the HSV team. After 177 first division appearances with 13 goals and winning the league cup in 2003, he left Hamburg to end his career with the Dutch second division club SC Heracles Almelo .

A final highlight was the promotion to the Eredivisie in 2005 , so that Hoogma made 30 first division appearances in 2005/06. After the 2005/06 season, Hoogma ended his career as an active player to move into the management of Heracles.

Functionary career

From January 1, 2007 to February 5, 2018, Hoogma worked as a manager for SC Heracles Almelo. During his tenure, the club established itself in the Eredivisie and in 2016 qualified for the third qualifying round of the UEFA Europa League , in which Heracles Almelo was eliminated by the Portuguese representative FC Arouca .

On February 6, 2018, Nico-Jan Hoogma was introduced as the new sports director of the Dutch Football Association. In this role he is responsible for all men's and women's national teams. Under Hoogma as sporting director, the Dutch senior national team for men - which had missed qualifying for both the 2016 European Championship and the 2018 World Cup - won the league in League A in the 2018/19 UEFA Nations League, ahead of world champions France and arch-rivals Germany . In the Final Four , the Dutch A-team reached the final, in which they were defeated by Portugal. In the penultimate game in the European Championship qualification, the Dutch senior team secured participation in the Europe-wide European Championship 2021 .

However, on November 4, 2016, Hoogma announced that he was no longer available for further negotiations and sharply criticized the club's management. However, Hamburger SV claimed that Hoogma was canceled and that it did not cancel the club. As a result, there was a public-led dispute over which party had ended the negotiations.
