history

Old club logo

The club was founded on May 3, 1903 and named after the Greek hero Heracles . In 1927 and 1941 , when there was only amateur football in the Netherlands, the club became national champions. After the introduction of professional football, the team never belonged to the absolute top. Occasional highlights were a few years in the honor division in the 1960s , a victory in the 1975 cup competition over Ajax Amsterdam , a one-year stay in the honor division in the 1985/86 season and promotion to the top class in June 2005 . In 2012 Heracles reached the final of the KNVB Cup. In Rotterdam they played against PSV Eindhoven , but lost 3-0.

The 2015/16 season ended in 6th place for Heracles and they reached the playoffs to qualify for the UEFA Europa League . In the playoffs they successfully beat FC Groningen and FC Utrecht and reached the third qualifying round for the UEFA Europa League. There they met FC Arouca from Portugal in the very first game in the club's history at European level . The first leg in Almelo ended 1: 1. The second leg in Portugal at FC Arouca 0-0 and they were eliminated.

Heracles received trial permission from the football associations UEFA and KNVB to play their home games on an artificial turf mat. The producer of this artificial turf , Koninklijke Ten Cate , a former textile manufacturer from Hellendoorn , is also a major sponsor of the association and hopes that the artificial grass areas will also be bought by top clubs.

Well-known players of the last seasons were or are u. a. Everton , Rob Maas , Mika Nurmela , Martin Pieckenhagen , Kai Michalke , Mark Uth , Wout Weghorst , Robin Gosens and Nico-Jan Hoogma . Hoogma retired after the 2005-06 season. From January 1, 2007 to February 2018, Hoogma worked as a manager for Heracles Almelo.

Stadion

Heracles Almelo plays its home games in the former Polman Stadium and since the renaming in July 2019 in what is now Erve Asito . The sports facility in Almelo was inaugurated in 1999 and replaced the stadium aan de Bornsestraat . From 2014 to 2015, the Polman Stadium was expanded from 8,500 to over 12,000 seats.
