Kai Michalke (born April 5, 1976 in the Bochum district of Werne ) is a former German football player . He played for VfL Bochum and 1. FC Nürnberg in the Bundesliga , among others, and made 17 appearances in the U-21 national team. In 2008 the offensive player ended his career in the Dutch honor division with Heracles Almelo .

Career

As a C-youth, Kai Michalke switched from his home club SG Werne to VfL Bochum in 1989. Even as a teenager, he drew so much attention to himself with his achievements that coach Jürgen Gelsdorf accepted him into the professional squad at the age of 17. Michalke played twelve times in the 2nd Bundesliga in the 1993/94 season, scored two goals and made it to the First Bundesliga with VfL. In the following season he shuttled between the starting eleven and the reserve bank and could not prevent relegation despite 24 appearances (5 goals). In 1994/95, coach Klaus Toppmöller radically turned the team upside down, and Michalke made the breakthrough as a regular. After being promoted again, he lost his regular place on the left flank to Olaf Schreiber , but contributed seven goals to the surprising qualification for the UEFA Cup . For the next two years, due to injury, he again commuted between the regular eleven and the reserve bank before moving to Hertha BSC in 1999/2000 .

Michalke was not happy on the Spree and only played 22 Bundesliga games in two years; but came to ten appearances in the 1999/2000 Champions League season . In 2001/02 he was transferred to 1. FC Nürnberg, where he played 43 times in two years and scored four goals. In 2003/04 he moved to Alemannia Aachen in the second division. There he shuttled between the regular eleven and the reserve bank in the first season, but established himself in the following season and scored his career record of eleven goals this season. He was part of the team that reached the DFB Cup final and (since cup winners Werder Bremen also became German champions) were allowed to play in the UEFA Cup. 2005/06 saw a reunion in the first division when he was transferred to MSV Duisburg . But there Michalke only played six games and moved to Heracles Almelo in the Dutch Eredivisie after one season . There he was initially stopped by an Achilles tendon rupture , but managed 22 season games in two years.

Michalke has played 158 (18 goals) Bundesliga, 99 (24) second division and 10 (1) Champions League games. He was used both in attack and in attacking midfield.

National team

Michalke played 17 times for the German U21 national team and scored six goals. In 1992 he was the U-16 European champion with the German U-16 team in Cyprus .

Coaching work

Michalke has a trainer license. For the 2009/10 season he moved to SG Wattenscheid 09 in the fifth class NRW league . He took over the coaching position of the B-youth and was also part of the first men's team, but already separated from SG Wattenscheid 09 in August 2009. In January 2010 Michalke was hired as a coach for the leader of the Landesliga Mittelrhein, SV Breinig ( Stolberg near Aachen). After a catastrophic second half of the season, they parted ways at the end of the season.
