Ismael Cheik Tioté (also Cheick Tioté ; born June 21, 1986 in Yamoussoukro ; † June 5, 2017 in Beijing , People's Republic of China ) was an Ivorian football player . The midfielder was most recently under contract with the Chinese second division side Beijing Enterprises .

Career

Tioté learned to play football from 1998 to 2005 at the Ivorian club Bibo FC . In summer 2005 he was brought to Belgium by RSC Anderlecht . In two years, the midfielder did not make more than four short appearances, but was part of the team that won the Belgian championship in 2006 and 2007 . For this reason, the club decided to loan Tioté to the Dutch Eredivisie representative Roda Kerkrade . Tioté made his league debut with the new club on September 2, 2007 in a 5-3 away win against VVV Venlo . At Kerkrade he was able to prevail, whereupon league competitor Twente Enschede became aware of him and took him under contract from the 2008/09 season . There he was runner-up in the first year and moved into the final of the KNVB Cup with the team , which was lost on penalties against SC Heerenveen . In the final he was on the pitch for the full 120 minutes. On August 26, 2010, Tioté moved to the Premier League promoted Newcastle United . On February 7, 2017, the Chinese second division team Beijing Enterprises from Beijing announced the commitment of Tioté.

Tioté played a total of 55 games for the Ivory Coast national team . He was in the squad at the 2010 and 2014 World Championships . On February 3, 2013, he scored his only international goal in a 2-1 defeat in the quarter-finals of the 2013 African Cup of Nations against Nigeria .

On June 5, 2017, Tioté collapsed while exercising and died an hour later at the age of 30 from complications from a heart attack . He left a pregnant wife and two children.
