The Ipswich Motorway is a freeway in the southeast of the Australian state of Queensland . It connects Ipswich Road in Rocklea ( Brisbane ) with the Logan Motorway (M2) in Gailes as M7 and then continues west as M2 to the Warrego Highway (NA2) and Cunningham Highway (N15) in Ipswich .

It first passes through Brisbane's southwestern suburbs of Rocklea, Oxley and Darra and then reaches the eastern suburbs of Ipswich, Redbank Plains, Goodna and Riverview . In Darra it is directly connected to the Centenary Motorway (M5) and in Gailes to the Logan Motorway (M2). In 2008 it was found that approximately 80,000 vehicles use the Ipswich Motorway every day. At the end of 2010 that number had risen to 100,000. In 2002 the morning rush hour was between 7:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. In 2008, she was found between 5:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m.

expansion

In 2003, planning began for the expansion of the motorway. It has been identified as a key issue in the South East Queensland Infrastructure Plan and Program . The expansion had become necessary to increase traffic safety and reduce traffic jams.

With the support of the Commonwealth of Australia, the expansion between the junctions of the Logan Motorway and the Centenary Motorway was carried out.

The expansion from four to six lanes between Wacol and Darra was one of the most important promises of the Australian Labor Party in the 2007 election campaign. In addition to widening the Ipswich Motorway, the expansion also included converting the junction of the Centenary Highway into a zero-height motorway triangle and work on the access roads, aiming to reduce traffic on the motorway by 20%. The Australian federal government supported the expansion with AU $ 3.18 billion. The new section from Wacol to Darra was opened to traffic on April 18, 2010.

The expansion of the 8 km section between Dinmore and Goodna began in mid-2009 and is due to be completed by the end of 2012. The AU $ 1.95 billion project, which in turn is subsidized by the Australian federal government, is funded by the Origin Alliance , consisting of the Department of Transport and Main Roads , Abigroup, Seymour White, Fulton Hogan, SMEC and Parsons Brinckerhoff, built.

The last part to be upgraded is the 7 km section between Darra and Rocklea. The planning for this was completed in 2011.

The proposed Goodna Bypass or Northern Bypass of the western part of the M2 were canceled after the 2007 elections. This seven kilometer stretch of new highway would have diverted traffic from the Warrego Highway and the Cunningham Highway to join the Logan Highway. Four bridges over the Brisbane River would have been included.
