The Pacific Motorway is a freeway in the southeast of the Australian state of Queensland . It connects the Inner City Bypass (M3) in downtown ( Brisbane ) with the Pacific Highway (R1) northwest of Tweed Heads on the Gold Coast in the area of the border with New South Wales .

The route section in the city of Brisbane was initially called the Riverside Expressway . The first part of this freeway, which opened in Brisbane in 1973, was formerly called the South East Freeway . The South East Freeway was given the number F3, but in 1994 that name and numbering were shelved. Since then, this section has also been part of the Pacific Motorway and is known as the M3.

The freeway has eight lanes from the Logan Motorway (QM6) to the Smith Street Motorway (S10) and the speed is limited there to 110 km / h. On the other sections of the route, it has four or six lanes and the speed limit is 100 km / h. The Pacific Motorway runs through the vital Gold Coast vacation region, where most of the road traffic from Brisbane flows. In the years 1990–1998, AU $ 2 billion were spent on this motorway, including its expansion.

In March 2006, the Queensland government presented a plan for major changes to the stretch between Springwood and Daisy Hill . This mainly concerned the expansion of the entrances and exits and was intended to solve the traffic problems on the access roads. This planning led to public protests, mainly from people whose properties and houses were to be expropriated for the renovation. Planning for the section between Daisy Hill and Loganholme began in August 2007.

There are also plans to gradually expand the four-lane section from Nerang to Tugun to six lanes.

The Tugun Bypass was completed in 2008. It has been expanded to four lanes and will not be expanded to six lanes until 2025.

The freeway opens up many Gold Coast tourist attractions such as Warner Bros. Movie World , Wet'n'Wild Water World and Dreamworld ,

Service centers

When the Pacific Motorway was expanded in September 2000, it was the first highway in Queensland to be equipped with service centers. There are two of them, one in Stapylton for southbound traffic and one in Coomera for northbound traffic. There are BP gas stations , McDonald’s and other chain restaurants , picnic areas and shops. The roofs are provided with solar panels to power the facilities.

Speed traps

There is a permanently installed speed camera for traffic heading north in Tarragindi and one in Loganholme shortly after the connection to the Logan Motorway.
