Queensland

The Inner City Bypass (ICB) is an urban freeway in Brisbane in the southeast of the Australian state of Queensland . The 4.5 km long bypass is located northwest of the city center. It connects the Pacific Motorway (also M3) and the Go Between Bridge in the southwest on Hale Street with Kingsford Smith Drive (S25), the Clem Jones Tunnel (M7) and Lutwyche Road (A3) in the northeast. For most of the route it follows the Exhibition Railway Line .

The southwestern part of the ICB to the intersection with Horace Street has been designated as M3.

The city highway cost AU $ 220 million, has six lanes, has 4 tunnels and 18 bridges and was the largest infrastructure project in Queensland for decades. Use is free of charge.

The ICB, commissioned by Brisbane City Council to build, is considered one of the most successful road projects in the city. It was completed much earlier than planned, stayed on budget and is now one of the busiest streets in Brisbane. At peak times there are long traffic jams in the lanes towards Hale Street, which has led to the nickname Inner City Car Park among the population .

construction

The ICB was built in three stages:

  • Stage 1 - Hale Street to Campbell Street (completed November 2001)
  • Stage 2 - Campbell Street to Abbotsford Road (completed February 2002)
  • Stage 3 - Abbotsford Road to Kingsford Smith Drive (completed July 2002)

Future road connections

Although not part of the TransApex project, the ICB is an indispensable part of the future tunnel connection and other planned city highways. The Inner City Bypass is to be connected to the Airport Link . The Airport Link should be completed in mid-2012.
