In 1979 he completed a degree in moral theology with Klaus Demmer . From 1979 to 1982 he was vicar in Ellwangen (Jagst) and Stuttgart , then repetent at the Wilhelmsstift in Tübingen. In 1986 he was promoted to Dr. theol. PhD with Alfons Auer .

From 1990 to 1994 he was professor for moral theology at the University of Regensburg and from 1994 professor for moral theology at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg . From 1996 Eberhard Schockenhoff was a member of the board of trustees of the Johann Adam Möhler Institute for Ecumenism in Paderborn and from 2001 managing editor of the journal for medical ethics . In 2001 he was appointed to the National Ethics Council by resolution of the Federal Cabinet , and in 2008 also to the successor body of the German Ethics Council, of which Schockenhoff was deputy chairman from 2008 to 2012. He was reappointed in 2012.

In 1998 he turned down a call to the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich to succeed Johannes Gründel and in 2006 he turned down an offer to the University of Tübingen to succeed Gerfried W. Hunold .

From 2009 he was a full member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences . In 2011 he was a signatory of the memorandum “ Church 2011: A Necessary Awakening ”. His brother was the politician Andreas Schockenhoff .

On July 18, 2020, he died at the age of 67 in Freiburg im Breisgau after falling in his apartment as a result of the accident.

Act

Schockenhoff mainly researched special moral theological issues such as the theological perspective of stem cell research or abortion. In addition, he took a position on natural law , on the relationship between human freedom and divine providence, and approached it in his book How certain is conscience? the subject of conscience .

In April 2010, during a program from the Report Mainz series, Schockenhoff described the Pius Brotherhood as a “right-wing swamp” and a case for the protection of the constitution . Thereupon he was reported by the Pius Brotherhood for defamation . In addition, the association demanded that his teaching license be withdrawn after he criticized the Catholic Church's relationship with homosexuals in an interview .

In the Good Hope? in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ) in September 2010 he commented on the approval of pre-implantation diagnostics (PGD) in Germany.

In 2011 Schockenhoff signed the memorandum Church 2011: A necessary departure .

In the discussion in July 2012 about how to deal with Catholics who remarry after a divorce, he saw the solution in the fact that “the church tolerates civil second marriage in the trust of the conscience judgment of those affected and no longer excludes them from receiving communion”. He considered going it alone nationally “not enough, because it is a problem of the universal Church. But a national bishops' conference could lead the way and possibly speed things up ”.

In March 2019, Schockenhoff called for a reform of the Roman Catholic sexual morality teaching at the spring plenary meeting of the German Bishops' Conference in Lingen .
