organization

The institute is supported by the association of the same name. It emerged in 2009 from the series of congresses of the same name, which started in Graz in 2007, and is its legal successor. The founders are the psychiatrist Raphael M. Bonelli , the psychoanalyst Walter Pieringer and the theologian Bernd Oberndorfer. The seat of the association is Vienna.

activity

According to its own information, the institute dedicates itself to the phenomenon of religiosity in connection with the human psyche from a scientific point of view in order to make a contribution to its removal from taboos in psychiatry, psychology and psychotherapy. Psychiatrists , psychologists , psychotherapists , philosophers and religious scholars are in dialogue with Catholic , Protestant , Orthodox and Free Church Christians, Jews , Buddhists , Muslims , Baha'i , agnostics and followers of ethnic religions at various events of the institute . "The focus is not on theological content and any interreligious differences, but on the common psychological phenomenon of religiosity and its integration into psychotherapy."

positioning

According to its own statements, the RPP Institute has no particular religious or ideological orientation. It claims to fully support the psychotherapeutic professional code , insofar as the personal worldview of the psychotherapist is not allowed to actively influence the treatment process. This includes both religious and anti-religious beliefs of the therapist.

According to the institute, the psychotherapeutic training courses organized by the RPP Institute are about the resource “religiosity”, not about any religious content (that would be “religion”). Under no circumstances would religious teachings of salvation, esoteric content or spiritual rituals be offered. The institute summarizes on its homepage: "Religion should neither be paternalistically devalued as a disease ('collective obsessional neurosis') nor stylized as a panacea : religiosity can be a valuable resource for some patients - and not for others."

University course

Together with the Sigmund Freud Private University, the RPP Institute repeatedly offers a two-year university course on the subject of “Spirituality in the Psychosocial Professions”, which comprises 24 ECTS points.

Congress and conferences: RPP

The institute started with an interdisciplinary congress under the name RPP in 2007 and has been holding specialist conferences at least every six months since autumn 2008.

Congress RPP 2007 Religiosity in Psychiatry and Psychotherapy

The first “RPP 2007” congress with the interdisciplinary motto “Psychiatry, Psychology, Psychotherapy in Dialogue with Religious Studies, Philosophy & Theology” took place in Graz from October 11th to 13th, 2007 and had over 1200 participants from 11 countries. The Austrian Society for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy (ÖGPP) took over the patronage.

The congress comprised 100 contributions from 140 speakers. The evangelical superintendent Hermann Miklas noted a traditional reluctance of many believers towards psychotherapy and, conversely, a critical attitude of psychotherapeutic currents towards religions. Therapists should be able to differentiate between healthy forms of religiosity from sick and disease-causing forms. The workshop “Church and Pedophilia”, at which the Catholic auxiliary bishop Andreas Laun discussed with the psychiatrist Peter Hofman, received public attention . A discussion about the practice of exorcism attracted further attention : the psychiatrist Hartmann Hinterhuber , who criticizes this practice, was contrasted with the theologian and exorcist Larry Hogan . In summary, the head of the clinic, Hans-Peter Kapfhammer, presented the challenge for psychiatric specialist science, not to start from images of God in church contexts, but to be open to include religiosity and thus images of God in the discussion. However, on some issues such as exorcism, there must be clear boundaries from a psychiatric perspective.

Kongress RPP 2015 International Congress on Science and / or Religion: a 21st Century Debate

In cooperation with the Sigmund Freud University in Vienna , a three-day congress was held with scientists from seven countries - including the Austrian psychiatrist Raphael Bonelli , Fraser Watts from Cambridge University in England and Sayyed Mohsen Fatemi from Harvard University in the USA . The Archbishop of Salzburg, Franz Lackner , made a statement to the participants at the end. The congress dealt with the challenges that arise at the interface between religion and science in the 21st century: New insights into the nature of the universe and human nature generated by science and technology influence traditional religious beliefs and perspectives. The question of the influence of religion and science on the “way of life” in the 21st century was also examined more closely. Scientists from Iran also took part.
