Nossrat Peseschkian

Nossrat Peseschkian (born June 18, 1933 in Kaschan , Iran ; † April 27, 2010 in Wiesbaden , Germany ) was a German neurologist , psychiatrist and psychotherapist of Iranian origin. He is the founder of positive psychotherapy (PPT) , which he has been developing since 1968.

Life

Born and raised in Iran, Peseschkian came to Germany in 1954 and studied medicine in Freiburg im Breisgau , Mainz and Frankfurt am Main , taking the state examination in 1960 in Frankfurt am Main. After his specialist training (neurology, psychiatry, psychotherapy ), his doctorate (1968) and further training in psychotherapy in Germany, Switzerland , Austria and the United States , he opened a practice and day clinic in Wiesbaden in 1968. After extensive journeys, academic and seminars in the field of depth psychology, he presented "differentiation analysis" as a new, transcultural method in lectures in the early 1970s, which he called "positive psychotherapy" after its further development from 1977 onwards. In a study started in 1995 with around 300 patients under practical conditions, its effectiveness in various diseases was proven. Positive psychotherapy is one of the humanistic and transcultural psychodynamic psychotherapies and can also integrate systemic, conversational and behavioral elements.

In 1977 Peseschkian became president of the newly founded German Society for Positive Psychotherapy e. V. and has since been the editor of the "Journal for Positive Psychotherapy" which he founded. The training in positive psychotherapy was later certified and recertified by the EAP committees as a Europe-wide training method and as scientifically sound. In 1988, together with his colleague Hans Deidenbach, he published the questionnaire "Wiesbaden Inventory of Positive Psychotherapy and Family Therapy WIPPF" in a folder which also contained the seven-page sheet "Initial Interview" he developed and a patient and therapist calendar for self-observation. The systematic first interview sheet was a new feature for psychodynamic therapy in 1988. An international version of the WIPPF, which was further developed by his staff, was translated into several languages and used in research.

Peseschkian had been a lecturer at the Academy for Medical Training of the State Medical Association of Hesse since 1976. In 1979 he received personal training authorization for psychotherapy from the State Medical Association of Hesse, which was expanded in 1996 as the Wiesbaden training group for psychotherapy and family therapy WIPF for the further training of doctors in psychotherapy. In 1994 he became the first president of the world association “International Centers for Positive Psychotherapy e. V. ”, which in 2008 became part of the“ World Association for Positive Psychotherapy WAPP e. V. ”, of which he was president until 2010. In 1998 he was appointed honorary professor at the National Psychoneurological Research Institute Bechterew in Saint Petersburg . He was a member of numerous specialist societies. In 2000 he founded the Wiesbaden Academy for Psychotherapy , state-recognized as a training center for psychological psychotherapy, child and adolescent psychotherapy and subsequently one of the leading depth psychological training institutes in Germany. Since 1990 Peseschkian has worked in working groups of the European Association for Psychotherapy EAP on a European harmonization of psychotherapeutic training standards.

Peseschkian held seminars and lectures in over 60 countries, published 26 books. Some of them, like the book “The Merchant and the Parrot” on the application of stories and transcultural examples in psychotherapy, one of his main areas of work, have been translated into many languages. Other focal points of his work were the development of a transcultural psychotherapy and a transcultural form of family therapy.

In 2005 Peseschkian founded the International Academy for Positive and Transcultural Psychotherapy - Peseschkian Foundation in Wiesbaden a. a. with the foundation's mandate to be the information and communication center for the centers, institutes and organizations for positive and transcultural psychotherapy existing in the various countries and to make a contribution to peace development and conflict research. In 2015 there were seven national societies (Germany, Ukraine, Bulgaria, Romania, Kosova, Turkey, Ethiopia) and centers for positive psychotherapy in about 18 other countries.

Peseschkian was married, had two sons and four grandchildren. Peseschkian was a follower of the Baha'i religion, about which he also wrote some works and which shaped his image of man.
