Hildegunde Piza-Katzer

Hildegunde Piza-Katzer (born April 2, 1941 in Gröbming ) is an Austrian surgeon ; She is considered one of the most influential personalities in the field of plastic and reconstructive surgery , especially hand surgery .

Life

Born in Styria in 1941, Hildegunde Piza-Katzer worked at the University Clinic in Vienna and at the Salzburg Regional Hospital from 1970 to 1992 after completing her studies in Graz . In 1992 she set up a plastic surgery department at Lainz Hospital , and was its director until 1999. Piza-Katzer was the first professor for plastic surgery in German-speaking countries. Since 1999 she has been head of the University Clinic for Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in Innsbruck . In 2000 she was named Scientist of the Year by the Austrian Club of Education and Science Journalists. Piza-Katzer was President of the Austrian Society for Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery from 1992 to 1994 and President of the Austrian Society for Surgery (1999 to 2000). Under her leadership, the Innsbruck Clinic for Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery becomes a center for surgical corrections of hand malformations in children.

Piza-Katzer performed the first successful hand transplant with Raimund Margreiter in 2000 . The recipient, Theo Kelz, was an Austrian police officer who had lost both hands in a pipe bomb .
