Willibald Ruch

Willibald Ruch (born July 22, 1956 in Kühnsdorf , Carinthia ) is Professor of Personality Psychology and Diagnostics at the University of Zurich .

biography

After attending school in Kühnsdorf and Klagenfurt (Abitur 1974 at the Bundesrealgymnasium Klagenfurt), Willibald Ruch studied concert guitar at the Carinthian State Conservatory in Klagenfurt from 1973 to 1975 and taught instrumental music at the Bundesrealgymnasium Klagenfurt from 1974 to 1975 . From 1975 to 1980 he studied at the Institute for Psychology (Board of Directors: Erich Mittenecker) of the Karl-Franzens-University in Graz and was awarded a Dr. phil. PhD. In 1976 he spent a study visit to the Department of Psychology and Department of Statistics at Miami University in Oxford (Ohio) , USA .

Ruch was a research associate at F.-J. Hehl at the Department of Experimental Biological Psychology at the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf and from 1983 to 1989 assistant professor at Department II at the Department of Psychology at the University of Düsseldorf. From 1989 to 1991 he was a research assistant at the Institute for Physiological Psychology at the University of Düsseldorf. Ruch completed his habilitation in 1991 at the Mathematics and Natural Sciences Faculty of the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf on the subject of "The emotion of amusement: forms of expression and conditions". From 1992–1998 he was a fellow in the Heisenberg program of the German Research Foundation (DFG) and worked in Paul Ekman's laboratory at the University of California , San Francisco (UCSF). In 1999 he became an adjunct professor in the mathematics and natural sciences faculty of Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf.

From 2000 to 2002 Willibald Ruch was Senior Lecturer for individual differences / motivation & emotion at the School of Psychology , Queen's University of Belfast . In 2002 he was appointed full professor at the Psychological Institute of the University of Zurich.

Research priorities

Ruch's research focuses on topics of differential psychology and diagnostics, especially positive psychology , and the study of humor. In the field of positive psychology, Ruch researches character strengths and virtues as well as the various orientations towards happiness, whereby questionnaires are provided for self-exploration.

He is a founding member of the International Positive Psychology Association (IPPA), of which he is a board member.

In the area of ​​humor and laughter, Ruch examines the sense of humor, amusement as emotion, the fear of being laughed at ( gelotophobia ) and cheerfulness as a characteristic and condition. Since 1995 Ruch has been co-editor of the book series Humor Research together with Victor Raskin , as well as other journals in the field of differential psychology , diagnostics and positive psychology . He is also an associate editor of the Humor-International Journal of Humor Research . In 2001, Ruch founded the International Summer School and Symposium of Humor and Laughter, which has been held annually since then. In 2002 he was President of the International Society of Humor Studies .
