Wolfgang Würfel (born March 31, 1932 in Leipzig ) is a German graphic artist , illustrator and painter .

Life

Wolfgang Würfel was born in 1932 as the son of a farmer in Leipzig-Connewitz. Wolfgang attended elementary and middle school in Flöha , where the family moved after the war. From 1946 to 1949 he completed an apprenticeship in the painting trade and graduated with the journeyman's examination. On the side he went to the evening nude drawing at the Volkshochschule in Chemnitz.

In 1949 he was accepted at the Dresden Art College (today: Dresden College of Fine Arts ), but he was unable to begin his studies for financial reasons. From 1951 he worked for the first time at the World Youth Festival for the German Advertising and Advertising Company (DEWAG). There he was entrusted with commercial graphic work, with which he was able to finance his studies.

Between 1950 and 1955 he studied at the Kunsthochschule Berlin-Weißensee Hochschule für Gestaltung with Arno Mohr and Ernst Rudolf Vogenauer . Here he also attended guest lectures with Werner Klemke , who was appointed to teach wood engraving at the university in 1951. In 1955 he finished his studies with a thesis on Lion Feuchtwanger and began a freelance work as a painter and graphic artist .

Cube is married for the second time. He has two daughters from his first marriage. Würfel lives in Glienicke / Nordbahn .

His teacher Werner Klemke encouraged him to use illustration and graphic techniques such as wood engraving . Würfel was one of the most productive book graphic artists in the GDR. He used techniques such as B. Wood engraving, mezzotint , oil graphics and pen drawing . He also illustrated various school and textbooks. For 20 years from 1968 onwards he illustrated a thousand features by the writer Heinz Knobloch , which appeared in the weekly post under the heading “With both eyes” .
