Maria Seidemann

Maria Seidemann (born October 16, 1944 in Engelsdorf , Leipzig ; † September 7, 2010 in Lehnin ) was a German writer .

Life

Maria Seidemann completed a three-year apprenticeship as an archivist at a technical college in Potsdam after she had passed her matriculation examination at EOS Dresden-Süd in 1964 . After completing this training, she taught history at the Potsdam Technical School. At the same time, she was studying the same subject at Humboldt University by distance learning . From 1972 to 1973 she took part in a literature course at the Leipzig Institute for Literature "Johannes R. Becher" . This was followed by a brief activity as archivist at the State Film Archive of the GDR . From 1974 Maria Seidemann lived as a freelance writer in Potsdam.

Maria Seidemann made her debut as an author with poems, later stories and novels from everyday life in the GDR followed. Since the mid-1980s, the focus of her work has been on books for children and young people. In 1983, in the youth book Neunfinger , she dealt with the topic of life with a physical disability, which had been largely taboo in the GDR .

Maria Seidemann, who was a member of the GDR Writers' Association from 1981 and of the Association of German Writers from 1990 , received a. a. The following awards: 1982 the Debut Prize of the GDR Writers' Association , 1986 the Theodor Fontane Prize of the Potsdam district , 1989 the Alex Wedding Prize , 1990 the Buxtehuder Bullen and 1998 the Ehm Welk Literature Prize .

In 2004 she suffered a serious traffic accident. The subsequent examination also resulted in a diagnosis of breast cancer. On September 7, 2010, she died at the age of 65 from complications from cancer.
