Manfred Blechschmidt

Manfred Blechschmidt (born September 17, 1923 in Bermsgrün ; † December 1, 2015 ) was a German native and dialect writer. He lived in Aue and Schwarzenberg and became known about his homeland through numerous publications in the Ore Mountains dialect and non-fiction books .

Life

The son of a technician worked as a forest worker after leaving school. In 1941 he was drafted into the Wehrmacht and used as a soldier in World War II . He was taken prisoner of war in the United States in April 1945 . After his release, he was picked up by Soviet soldiers and imprisoned, so that he could not return home until November 1946. At the end of the 1940s, Blechschmidt met his wife Ingeborg Delling (1930–2019), whom he married in 1949, as a forestry candidate in Unterlauterbach in Vogtland . From 1950 he studied at the Tharandt Forestry Academy and after completing his studies worked as a district forester and forest judge in Bockau . From 1954 he was director of the adult education center in Aue and a specialist in biology. From 1960 to 1963 he completed a degree in pedagogy at the Institute for Teacher Training in Auerbach and then until 1966 at the University of Education in Erfurt .

Blechschmidt was involved in the GDR in the Kulturbund , in which he was among other things editor-in-chief of the magazine Glückauf - Heimat- und Kulturblätter des Kreis Aue / Sa. was active. He was also an external editor for the VEB Friedrich-Hofmeister-Verlag Leipzig for Ore Mountains and Vogtland dialect poetry. For his services to cultural work, he was awarded the GDR Medal of Merit on October 7, 1959 . Blechschmidt agitated for a new socialist concept of home , for "contemporary dialect poems and songs" and for building a "fairer society". In 1959 he published the thesis that the term “home” was misused by the ruling class under capitalism to seduce the masses. With the argument that a worker could neither feel at home nor secure nor comfortable under capitalist conditions, he came to the conclusion that home can only be “where we can work in peace and build socialism” and human freedom is guaranteed. In 1976, he was critical of the few Ore Mountains song postcards that had appeared in recent decades. But they could not continue the good traditions or raise them to a higher level corresponding to our socialist conditions.

Manfred Blechschmidt was a member of the SED and belonged to the district editing office for writing workers in the Karl-Marx-Stadt district .

For his "groundbreaking achievements in the field of Ore Mountain dialect poetry", especially in the book Viel Troppen make e Wasser , in which he uses dialect poetry to fight against superstition, philistine bourgeoisie and backwardness, he received the district's art prize on November 19, 1960 Karl Marx City. In an accompanying tribute it was emphasized that Blechschmidt "repeatedly stands up against homeland fuss and for a new, socialist love of homeland" . In the same year, together with Friedrich Barthel, he published the anthology Voices of the Homeland , which for the first time comprehensively summarized dialect poems of the Ore Mountains and Vogtland dialects and introduced the dialect authors. In 1982 he published a fundamental article on the Marxist-Leninist view of the concept of home and its application in folklore maintenance in the Saxon Heimatblatt .

From its founding in October 1963 until his retirement in 1989, Blechschmidt headed the Erzgebirge Ensemble Aue - initially on a voluntary basis for a few years - which at the time was committed to maintaining “progressive traditions of the Ore Mountains customs”. “This is how we see our work,” wrote Manfred Blechschmidt in 1969, “in an active position on reality and the present. The Erzgebirge ensemble or groups of them made 25 guest appearances in the armed forces that stood at our borders to protect the socialist achievements. We were happy to fulfill this mandate because we had something to say to these comrades and were also understood. ”He had a decisive influence on the development of cultural events such as the Festival of Light and Dance in Aue and the Festival of Song and Joy (a 1963 first held forerunner of the light festival ) in Schneeberg . In 1983 he was also a founding member of the Aue branch of the Goethe Society as part of the Kulturbund work .

On June 14, 1968, Blechschmidt was awarded the State Prize for National Artistic Creation, 1st Class, and in 1973 the Johannes R. Becher Medal in gold. Further honors were in 1981 the “ Kurt Barthel ” culture prize of the Karl-Marx-Stadt district (together with Klaus Walther ), the Kurt Barthel Medal in 1984 from the Ministry of Culture and the Patriotic Order of Merit in bronze awarded in 1988 . In addition, since 1980 he was honorary chairman of the Aue district leadership of the Kulturbund.

Blechschmidt has worked as a freelance writer since 1984. He had been a member of the GDR Writers' Association since 1960 and after the fall of the Wall belonged to the Association of German Writers in Saxony . In the course of his work more than 60 books were created, about a third of them in the Ore Mountains dialect. He published several local history books about the Erzgebirge and Vogtland such as the Bergland-Mosaik , Das große Buch vom Vogtland and the Silver Ore Mountains , which appeared in numerous editions. In addition, there were three plays for amateur players, 27 brochures about regional history, 57 new dialect songs and more than 1000 mostly local history articles in cultural magazines, weekly and daily newspapers (e.g. a weekly article in the weekend supplement of the Chemnitz daily Freie Presse ). He used many of his articles several times. Since 1990 he has also been one of the editors of the home and home calendar from the Ore Mountains and Vogtland .

In a review of the Erzgebirgs-Lexikon published in 1991, the historian Helmut Bräuer criticized numerous imbalances, factual errors and contradictions within Blechschmidt's representations. He summed up the criticism with the words: "Even a tourist has a right to be precisely informed."

On the occasion of his 90th birthday and the 50th anniversary of the Erzgebirge Ensemble Aue, Blechschmidt was honored with the Schwarzenberg Edelweiss of the city of Schwarzenberg in December 2013 and with the bridge badge of the city of Aue in January 2014 .

Blechschmidt lived in Aue until 1991 and then moved to Erla . After spending the last year of his life in the Albert-Schweitzer-Haus nursing home in Schwarzenberg, he died in early December 2015 at the age of 92. Shortly before, Blechschmidt had handed over his local history to the Erla-Crandorf homeland and school association . Since November 2019, the Manfred-Blechschmidt-Stube has been set up in the Herrenhof of the Erla ironworks , in which his work is honored and parts of his estate are presented.

An autobiography announced in February 2012 as a “life confession” has not yet been published.
