Kurt Barthel Medal

The Kurt Barthel Medal was a state award of the German Democratic Republic (GDR), which was donated on April 2, 1979 in one step. They were awarded in recognition and appreciation of the merits of full-time and honorary leaders and employees of youth clubs, clubs and cultural institutions of all legal entities, of institutions for museums, cinematography, libraries and the book trade in the development of the intellectual and cultural life of the GDR. Especially for special merits and exemplary initiatives. The first award ceremony took place on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the GDR. Incidentally, only individuals who received a certificate and a bonus of 500 marks could be honored with this medal. The award was made by the chairman of the district councils on the occasion of Republic Day on October 7th each year.

Appearance and wearing style

The gold-plated medal with a diameter of 30 mm shows on its obverse the relief of Kurt Barthel's head, who looks to the right from the viewer, as well as the signature curved upwards to the left: KURT BARTHEL . The reverse of the medal showed the GDR's national coat of arms. The medal was worn on the upper left side of the chest on a 24 × 13 mm wide blue-colored clasp with a gold miniature of the GDR's national coat of arms measuring 10 mm in diameter. The interim clasp was of the same quality and also showed the 10 mm gold miniature of the GDR's national coat of arms.
