Helmut Bräuer (born January 26, 1938 in Chemnitz ) is a German archivist and historian .

Life

Bräuer is the son of a textile worker and a master upholsterer and decorator and attended high school in Stollberg . From 1956 to 1959 he studied history and geography at the Karl Marx University in Leipzig . From 1959 to 1971 he was a teacher of history and geography at the Karl Marx Oberschule in Zwönitz . In 1963 he joined the Socialist Unity Party of Germany . He received his PhD in 1969. Dr. phil. with the dissertation on the civil chronology of the city of Zwickau in the 16th century . In 1971 he became director of the Karl-Marx-Stadt city archive . In the following year he made up for the lack of specialist training in the field of archives through a two-year correspondence course at the Institute for Archival Studies at the Humboldt University in Berlin with Botho Brachmann , which he graduated in 1974 with a degree in archivist. 1986 followed the doctorate B to Dr. sc. phil. with the work of skilled craftsmen in Saxon cities of the 15th and 16th centuries. Investigations into their social place, their organization and social movement . From 1988 to 1992 he worked as a full professor for the territorial history of Saxony at the University of Leipzig. From 1993 to 1998 Bräuer was visiting professor at the Universities of Vienna , Basel and Salzburg . He has been in retirement since 2003, during which he pursues extensive publishing activities.

Bräuer was a member of the Historians' Society of the GDR from 1972 to 1990 and has been a member of the Historical Commission of the Saxon Academy of Sciences in Leipzig since 1986 .

Research priorities

Bräuer's research activities, which resulted in numerous monographic and dependent publications, focus on the urban , social , mentality and historiography - history of the city of Chemnitz and the Ore Mountains during the late Middle Ages and the early modern period . He focuses on the everyday life of the different social classes and the crises that have to be overcome at different times.
