Botho Brachmann

Botho Brachmann (born October 29, 1930 in Berlin-Pankow ) is a German archivist and historian . For twenty years he was professor of archival science at the Humboldt University in Berlin and holder of the only university chair for this science in Germany.

Botho Brachmann attended elementary school and the Eosander secondary school in Berlin, which he graduated from high school in 1950. In the same year he began studying history , German , pedagogy and psychology at the Humboldt University of Berlin (HUB) , which he successfully completed in 1954 with the state examination for higher teaching qualifications. In the same year he became a lecturer and deputy director at the Institute for Archive Studies (Potsdam) . From 1955 to 1960 he was director of the technical college for archives in Potsdam .

In 1957 Botho Brachmann received his doctorate with the dissertation Russian Students in Berlin 1900–1914. A contribution to Russian political emigration at the Philosophical Faculty. Reviewers were Eduard Winter and Karl Obermann . From 1957 to 1958 he obtained the state examination for higher archival service as an external student at the Institute for Archival Science and qualified as a professor in October 1962. In September 1964 he became a lecturer in archive administration and historical auxiliary sciences at the HUB.

In 1971 Botho Brachmann was appointed head of the archival science department at Humboldt University and in 1976 he was appointed associate professor and in 1987 full professor for the chair of archival science. Here he worked alongside Friedrich Beck , Reiner Groß and Josef Hartmann until 1996 and played a key role in the international recognition of archival science as an information science that is historically oriented.
