Friedrich Barthel (folklorist)

Friedrich Hartwig Barthel (born August 30, 1903 in Falkenstein / Vogtland , † July 14, 1989 in Waren (Müritz) ) was a German local researcher , folklorist , dialect researcher and dialect poet . He became known for his dialect poems and articles on local history and language history, which were created, among other things, in French captivity.

Life

He attended the teachers' seminar in Auerbach and began teaching in 1924 in Rebesgrün and Poppengrün as a substitute teacher. From 1927 he studied German , history , French and education at the University of Leipzig . In 1932 he received his doctorate under Theodor Frings and Fritz Karg on the subject of The Vogtland-Western Ore Mountains Language Area . He then resumed school work until it was interrupted by World War II. The war ended for him with a year as a prisoner of war in France. After his return to Falkenstein, he initially worked as a roofer and from 1953 back as a vocational school teacher. In 1968 he retired.

Act

In French captivity he began to write dialect poetry. In the post-war years he also devoted himself to folklore. He temporarily headed the local history museum in Falkenstein and then devoted himself to the Falkenstein carving group, where he contributed to the popularization of the Vogtland legendary figure of the Moosmann . After retiring, Barthel founded the “Folklore Center Erzgebirge / Vogtland” in Schneeberg and a voluntary scientific advisory board for the care of folklore in the Ore Mountains and Vogtland. He was an editor at Kulturspiegel Auerbach and wrote a total of over 300 articles on local history and language history, especially dialect research. In his contributions he dealt with festivals and customs, folk art, legends, songs and dances, but also with settlement, handicrafts, mining, food, folk costumes, onomatology. For his services he received the Johannes-R.-Becher-Medal in silver in 1962 , in 1968 the badge of honor "For local history achievements" in gold and the cultural award " Kurt Barthel " of the Karl-Marx-Stadt district .
