The Erich Wewel Verlag published mainly philosophical, theological and religious studies works.

In 1936 Erich Wewel founded the publishing house “Das Wort in der Zeit” and took over the magazine of the same name from Manz Verlag and the magazine Der Prediger und Katechet in their 86th year. In 1937 the publishing house moved to Krailling near Munich. In 1938 both magazines were banned. The publisher was renamed Erich Wewel Verlag . The first publisher's prospectus from 1939 was printed by an English magazine with the comment that there were still intellectual independent publishers in Germany, whereupon it was confiscated by the Gestapo . Wewel had chosen the eagle of the Evangelist Johannes as the publisher's signature. Beneath it stood the verse of Holderlin: " Because the poets have to stick to the eagle so that they do not interpret themselves angry with their own senses, dwell above the flight of the bird ... the prophetic ones."

One of the first published works was Josef Sellmair's book Der Mensch im Tragik , with which Wewel precisely hit the inner situation of many people who suffered in themselves and in time. Typical of Wewel's ecumenical stance was Joseph Pascher's book Inwendiges Leben in der Werkgefahr, published in 1940 . His publishing house also brought out books for children and young people with artistic equipment. But since Wewel did not comply with the request of the Reich Propaganda Ministry to remove everything Christian and religious from these books, their production had to be stopped again. Other books were banned by the Gestapo. The first decommissioning decision was issued in 1943, the second, final one in 1944.

Due to illness, Erich Wewel was only able to publish books again in 1948. He was particularly committed to the German Complete Edition of the Works of Wladimir Solowjew , whose typography was provided by Jan Tschichold .

In 1951 the publishing house moved to Freiburg im Breisgau . The three-volume moral theological work The Law of Christ by Bernhard Häring was a great success , which in a short time had eight editions and was translated into eleven languages.

The publishing house concentrated primarily on philosophical, theological and religious studies works. Some authors: Eugen Biser , Emerich Coreth , Julius Cardinal Döpfner , Heinrich Fries , Hanna-Barbara Gerl-Falkovitz , Bernhard Häring , Andreas Evaristus Mader , Nikolaus Monzel , Ludolf Müller , Thomas Ohm , Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger , Wladimir Solowjew .

Wewel attached particular importance to the harmony of spiritual statements, linguistic statements, typesetting, printing and the overall layout of his books. They have repeatedly been among the “most beautiful books of the year”.

In 1965, for health reasons, Wewel attached his publishing house to the GJ Manz publishing house in Munich, but retained the spiritual direction, which is why Munich and Freiburg i. Br. Were considered the place of publication. In 1974 Wewel died after a long illness. Because Manz stopped its book production in 1998, Erich Wewel Verlag came to Auer-Verlag in Donauwörth and then to the Klett publishing group in Stuttgart, which took over all of the shares in Auer-Verlag. In 2006 the Erich Wewel Verlag was sold to the Sankt Ulrich Verlag in Augsburg, which in 2012 only has a few books in the Wewel range available and no longer publishes any new books under the "Wewel" label.

In the takeover agreement of November 4, 1965, Manz had to undertake to design new books from Erich Wewel Verlag "in terms of content and language so that Christians of other denominations cannot feel offended."
