Ludolf Müller (literary scholar)

Ludolf Müller (born April 5, 1917 in Schönsee , today Kowalewo Pomorskie; † April 22, 2009 in Tübingen ) was a German Slavic scholar and literary scholar .

Life

Müller was the fourth of six children of the Protestant pastor and later regional bishop of the Evangelical Church of the Ecclesiastical Province of Saxony , Ludolf Hermann Müller (1882-1959) and the younger brother of the lawyer Konrad Müller (1912-1979). After West Prussia fell to Poland in 1919, the father was expelled from Poland in 1921; in 1922 he became pastor in Dingelstedt near Halberstadt, in 1927 superintendent in Heiligenstadt in Eichsfeld. From 1927, Müller attended grammar school there. After graduating from high school, he studied Protestant theology in Leipzig, Bethel and Rostock from 1935 to 1937 . In 1937 he went to the Reformed Theological College in Sárospatak in Hungary for a year , where his interest in Eastern European languages ​​and cultures was aroused. After his return he studied theology and philosophy as well as Slavic studies in Halle, the latter with Dmitrij Tschižewskij .

From 1939 to 1945 Müller was a soldier, after his release from American captivity, he completed his studies in Slavic Studies in Göttingen and Marburg and received his doctorate here under Dmitrij Tschižewskij in 1947 with a thesis on Vladimir Solovyov . From 1947 to 1949 he worked as Tschižewskij's assistant at the University of Marburg, in 1949 he completed his habilitation there in the theological faculty (under Ernst Benz ) with a thesis on the criticism of Protestantism in Russian theology and philosophy and taught church history as a private lecturer until 1953 Slavic Studies.

In 1953 Müller was appointed to the chair for Slavic Philology at the University of Kiel , from there to Tübingen in 1961 , where he taught until his retirement in 1982. Since 1973 he was a full member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences .

Since 1943 Müller was married to the church musician Gerlinde geb. Güldemeister; The marriage resulted in three children, including the business lawyer and author Lothar Müller-Güldemeister .

The main research interests of Müller were Russian literary history, church history, intellectual history from the 10th to the 20th century; especially the old Russian literature of the Kiev era; 19th century Russian philosophy (especially Vladimir Solovyov); Dostoevsky's life and work ; poetic translation of Russian poetry.
