Dmytro Chyzhevsky (proper spelling, Russian Дмитрий Чижевский Dmytro Chyzhevsky , emphasizing: Dmytro Chyzhevsky ; originally Ukrainian Дмитро Чижевський Dmytro Tschyschewskyj even Dmytro Čyževs'kyj ; born March 23 . Jul / 4. April  1894 greg. In Alexandrija , Russian Empire ; † 18 April 1977 in Heidelberg , Germany ) was a German Slavist , philosopher and cultural scientist of Russian-Ukrainian origin.

Life

Tschižewskij studied first in St. Petersburg (1911-1913) and then in Kiev , where he graduated in 1918. In 1921 he emigrated to Germany, where he a. a. studied philosophy with Karl Jaspers and Martin Heidegger , from 1924 he was a lecturer in Ukrainian at the Free Ukrainian University in Prague. In 1932 he became a lecturer in Russian at the University of Halle and remained so until 1945. Since his wife, whom he married in 1919, was of Jewish descent, Tschižewskij was considered to be "non-Aryan". His wife emigrated to the USA with their daughter in 1939.

After the end of the war he fled to Marburg, where he was visiting professor until 1951, after which he taught at Harvard University until 1956 . From 1956 he was professor of Slavic studies at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg . He also taught as a visiting professor at the University of Cologne . After the period of statelessness, he took German citizenship. Since 1962 he was a member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences . He was a member of the Poetics and Hermeneutics group .

His work in the field of Slavic studies includes a large number of works on the literature and philosophy of Russia, Ukraine and other Slavic countries.

Dmitrij Tschižewskij was buried in the Bergfriedhof (Heidelberg) .
