Ioan Robu (born November 6, 1944 in Târgu Secuiesc , Transylvania , Romania ) is a Romanian clergyman and emeritus Roman Catholic Archbishop and Metropolitan of Bucharest .

Life

Ioan Robu entered the seminary of St. Joseph after graduating from high school in Iași and studied at the Theological Institute of the University of Alexandru Ioan Cuza Iași . He was ordained a priest on August 15, 1968 by Bishop Petru Pleşca . He was vicar in Craiova and pastor in Tulcea , Kogălniceanu and Buzău . From 1973 to 1977 he completed a doctoral degree to become a Dr. theol. at the Pontifical Lateran University and the Accademia Alfonsiana in Rome. From 1977 to 1983 he was professor and rector of the Theological Institute at the University of Alexandru Ioan Cuza Iași.

In 1983 he was first appointed diocesan administrator in Bucharest by Pope John Paul II , and in 1984 he was appointed titular bishop of Cellae in Proconsulari and apostolic administrator in the Archdiocese of Bucharest . He received his episcopal consecration on December 8, 1984, the Cardinal Secretary of State Agostino Cardinal Casaroli in Rome; Co- consecrators were the Curia Archbishop, Nuncio and later Cardinal Luigi Poggi and Archbishop Mario Schierano . His motto is “And the truth will set you free” ( John 8:32  EU ).

In 1990 he was appointed Archbishop and Metropolitan of Bucharest by papal decree. Ioan Robu is the chairman of the Romanian Bishops' Conference .

Since 2001 he has been an honorary member of the Romanian Academy .

Pope Francis accepted his age-related resignation on November 21, 2019.
